2 Installing the Drive in a SPARCcenter 2000 System

Make sure you read the Preface for the safety precautions and perform the tasks described in Chapter 1 before proceeding with this chapter.

2.1 Preparing the System

    1. Power off the cabinet before proceeding with the following sections.

Refer to the SPARCcenter 2000 System Installation Manual (P/N 800-6975-xx) for instructions.

    2. Open the top front panel by pulling on its right side. See Figure 2-1.

Figure 2-1 Opening the Top Front Panel

You can install the auto-loader in any of the three locations shown in Figure 2-2.

Figure 2-2 Drive Bays for Auto-Loaders (SPARCcenter 2000 System)

    3. If you are installing an auto-loader in an empty drive bay, proceed to Section 2.3, "Installing the Auto-Loader," on page 2-4. If you are replacing an existing tape drive or auto-loader, proceed to Section 2.2, "Removing an Existing Drive."

2.2 Removing an Existing Drive

    1. Locate the tape drive you want to remove.

See Figure 2-2 for drive locations.

    2. Use the 7 mm hex-head socket to remove the four mounting screws that secure the drive to the cabinet. See Figure 2-3.

    3. Slide the drive from the cabinet until the cables attached to the drive are exposed.
    4. Unplug the power cable, the SCSI ID cable, and the SCSI data cable from the rear of the drive.

Firmly, but gently, pull the cable away from the connector at the rear of the tape drive. (For the power and SCSI ID cables, grasp each cable connector on both sides; for the SCSI data cable, use the strain relief tab.)

    5. Remove the tape drive from the bay.
    6. If you are installing a new auto-loader in the bay, proceed to Section 2.3, "Installing the Auto-Loader."
    7. If you are not installing a new drive in the empty drive bay:
      a. Install a cover plate on the bay.
      b. Proceed to Section 2.4, "Reassembling the System," on page 2-8."

2.3 Installing the Auto-Loader

Note - Make sure you have attached the mounting brackets to the auto-loader, as described in Chapter 1, "Preparing for Installation."

    1. If there is a cover plate on the drive bay where you will install the drive, remove the plate.

Use the 7 mm hex-head socket to remove the screws that secure the plate to the cabinet. Store the cover plate in a safe place.

    2. Locate the address cable for the auto-loader.

One end of this cable is plugged into the device select switch for the drive bay. Figure 2-4 shows the device select switch for a right drive bay. (Left drive bays have the device select switch on the right of the bay.)

Figure 2-4 Device Select Switch for a Right Drive Bay

    3. Plug the address cable into the SCSI ID connector at the rear of the
    auto-loader. See Figure 2-5.

Position the address cable so that the black wire is located at the lower right corner of the SCSI ID connector.

Figure 2-5 Positioning the Address Cable

    4. Plug the power harness cable from the drive bay into the power connector (P1) attached to the fan assembly bracket on the drive.
    5. Plug the SCSI data cable from the drive bay into the SCSI connector on the drive.
    6. Tuck the cables in behind the drive and slide the drive into the drive bay. See Figure 2-6.

Figure 2-6 Inserting the Auto-Loader into the Drive Bay

    7. Secure the drive to the cabinet. See Figure 2-6.

Use the 7mm hex-head socket to install the four screws at the front of the mounting brackets.

    8. Determine the SCSI address for the installed auto-loader.

The SCSI address depends on the SPARCcenter 2000 system configuration and the location of the drive.

For example, your system has both a CD-ROM drive and a 1/4-inch tape drive in the lower right bay (ID 6 and ID 5). See Figure 2-7. If all other drive bays are empty, you can:

Note - If the SPARCcenter 2000 system has more than one 1/4-inch tape drive, however, the ID numbers for all 1/4-inch tape drives must be higher than the ID numbers for any 8 mm or 4 mm tape drives.

Figure 2-7 SCSI Addresses for CD_ROM and 1/2-Inch Tape Drive

    9. Press the "+" or "-" buttons on the device select switch until you reach the proper address. See Figure 2-7.

2.4 Reassembling the System

Caution -

Make sure the drawer for the 20 Gbyte 4 mm tape auto-loader is closed before closing the front panel on the SPARCcenter 2000 system.

    1. Swing the top panel towards the cabinet and press against its right side until you hear it click into place.
    2. Power on the system.

Refer to the SPARCcenter 2000 System Installation Manual (P/N 800-6975-xx) for instructions on powering on the cabinet.

Caution -

If you want to move the cabinet around the room, you must first install the shipping restraints on the auto-loader to keep the auto-loader drawer secure. Follow the instructions on the label on the main restraint piece to install the shipping restraints; follow the instructions on the same label to remove the shipping restraints once you have stopped moving the cabinet.

2.5 Verifying Connection (Optional)

To make sure that your system recognizes the newly-installed auto-loader, use the procedures in Appendix A, "Probing for SCSI Devices."
