This chapter describes the disk card, system requirements, and safety precautions. It also tells you how to unpack and inspect your disk card.
Two types of disk cards can be used with the SPARCserver(TM) 1000 and disk tower 1000 systems:
A disk card supports four SCSI-2 disk drives. See Figure 1-1.
Each disk drive has a controller board with a unique 80-pin connector that fits into an 80-pin SCSI-2 expansion connector. A retainer latch secures each disk drive to the disk card. The DC-DC converter supplies 12V to the disk drives. The backplane connector provides +5V to the disk card.

Four LEDs indicate activity in the associated disk drives. Note that the numbers 0, 1, 2 and 3 in Figure 1-1 refer to the location of the disk drive on the disk card. Drive 0 is on the front left of the disk card, drive 1 is on the rear left, drive 2 is on the rear right, and drive 3 is on the front right of the disk card.
The SCSI IN port is used to connect the disk card to the system board or SBus card. On the 2.1 Gbyte disk card the SCSI OUT port is used only to terminate the SCSI bus. On the 4.2 Gbyte disk card the SCSI OUT port is used either to terminate the SCSI bus or to daisy chain disk cards. The 2.1 Gbyte disk card has a third connector, which is reserved.
Only 4.2 Gbyte disk cards can be daisy-chained. You can have up to three such disk cards on one chain. The SCSI IN port on the first disk card in the chain must be connected to the SWIS/S card. The SCSI OUT port of that disk card must be connected to the SCSI IN port on the next disk card in the chain. The SCSI OUT port on the last disk card in the chain must have a single-ended SCSI terminator. (See Appendix A for configuration options.)
SCSI addresses are hard-wired on the 2.1 Gbyte disk card, so that drive 0 is always drive 0 on the SCSI bus. SCSI addresses for drives on the 4.2 Gbyte disk card are automatically assigned, based on the system slot in which the disk card is installed. See Table 1-1 for the SCSI addresses for disk cards in both the SPARCserver 1000 and disk tower 1000 systems.

Note - Slot 0 and slot 2 in the disk tower 1000 system must not be connected in the same chain because of SCSI address conflicts.
The following sections describe the requirements for each type of disk card.

To protect yourself and the equipment, observe the precautions shown in Table 1-2 when working on the server.

The following tools are needed to perform the installation:
If the carrier's agent is not present when the container is opened, and the contents are damaged, keep all contents and packing materials for the agent's inspection.
Save the carton and the packing material for possible later use.
Make sure the adhesive side is against your skin. See Figure 1-2.

Hold the disk card by the edges, near the middle of the board. Keep the board vertical until you lay it on the ESD mat.
If an ejector drive retainer extends past the edge of the disk card or is not fully closed, the disk drive connector is not joined with the disk card connector. Do the following:
The drive should slide out from the connector. See Figure 1-4.

If there is a problem, put the disk card back into its protective packaging, and contact your service representative.
As the ejector drive retainer closes, it forces the connectors together. You will hear the latch snap closed.
Note - Save the anti-static shipping bag and other original packing. You will need these materials when transporting the disk card.
