System Chassis Side Vent Replacement

Upgrading SPARCserver(TM) 1000 or 1000E system boards with 90 MHz SuperSPARC(TM) modules (Model SM91), or installing new 90 MHz SuperSPARC module-equipped system boards into the SPARCserver 1000 or 1000E card cage requires that both side vent panels be replaced with new increased air flow side vent panels. Replacing the panels ensures that adequate cooling is provided to the system boards and other chassis components.

Note - Side vent panel replacement is not required for those SPARcserver 1000 or 1000E systems installed in the 56-inch cabinet using rack mount rail kit. Rack mount kit rail installations require that all plastic panels, including the side vent panels be removed in the course of performing the installation.

Removing the Front Panel

The front panel rests in a groove along the top front edge of the top panel.

    1. If a key switch is present, remove the key from the key switch.
    2. Place your fingers under the arrow embossed on the front panel and press up on the latch to release the panel.

    See Figure A-8.

Note - If the panel resists becoming unlatched, press down on the top of the panel with one hand while pressing up on the latch with the other. This should release the latch.

    3. With the panel released, gently swing the panel bottom away from the chassis and lift it clear.

    Set the panel aside.

Removing the Old Side Vent Panels

The side panels are self-attached slide and lock panels.

    1. Grasp the panel with both hands, and slide it toward the rear of the chassis about 2 1/2 centimeters (about one inch).

Tap the front edge of the panel with the heel of your hand if necessary to slide the panel toward the rear of the chassis. See Figure 2.

    2. Pull the panel away, free of the chassis, and set it aside.
    3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to remove the remaining side panel.

Note - The plastic panels are recyclable. You can store them if you wish or recycle them in accordance with local regulations.

Installing the New Side Vent Panels

    1. Align the new panel against the side of the chassis, but offset about 2 1/2 centimeters (about one inch) toward the rear of the chassis.

    See Figure 3.

    2. Slide the panel toward the front of the chassis until the retainer features on the inside of the panel engage the chassis. Slide home so the front edge of the panel is flush with the front edge of the chassis and the panel is locked in place.

Replacing the Front Panel

    1. Align the panel with front of the chassis and slightly above with the top tilted inward.

    See Figure 1.

    2. Lower the panel so the inside edge rests in the groove along the top edge of the chassis.
    3. Let the panel fall flush against the chassis and tap the bottom-center of the panel to latch it in place.
    4. If a key was removed the key from the key switch, replace it now.
