Convention

Used for

boldface

In code examples, bold type highlights lines of code discussed in the text.

italics

Italics indicates information that the user or application provides, such as variables in syntax diagrams. It is also used to introduce new terms.

monospace

Monospace typeface is used for file names, sample command lines, and code elements such as class names and method names. It is also used for code examples.

[ ]

In syntax notation, brackets indicate optional items.

...

In syntax notation, an ellipsis indicates that the previous argument can be repeated. In a code example, an ellipsis represents code that has been omitted for clarity.

|

A vertical bar separates two mutually exclusive choices.

A column of three dots indicates the continuation of previous lines of code.
