4.2 Oracle VM Manager Components

The applications necessary to run Oracle VM Manager are packaged in the ISO image. Some or all of the following applications may be installed on the host computer when you install Oracle VM Manager:

Oracle VM Manager

The Oracle VM Manager application provided as a Oracle WebLogic Server domain and container.

Oracle WebLogic Server 11g

Oracle WebLogic Server Release 11g, including Application Development Framework (ADF) Release 11g. For more information about Oracle WebLogic, see the Oracle WebLogic 11g documentation:

http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21764_01/wls.htm

Use of Oracle WebLogic Server with Oracle VM Manager is restricted to the servlet functionality without clustering for the Oracle VM Management Server.

Oracle VM Manager Management Repository

Oracle VM Manager is able to use any of the following database types to act as a management repository:

  • Oracle Database Standard Edition (Oracle SE)

  • Oracle Database Enterprise Edition (Oracle EE)

  • MySQL Enterprise Edition

If you select to use MySQL as your backend repository, Oracle VM Manager can be installed using the Simple installation which will locally install the default MySQL database that is packaged with the Oracle VM Manager installer. Oracle VM Manager makes use of its own version of MySQL 5.5 Enterprise Edition which is licensed for exclusive use by Oracle VM (see MySQL Enterprise Edition ). MySQL is installed into the standard location with databases and configuration information located at /u01/app/oracle/mysql/data. The MySQL server that is installed uses a non-standard TCP Port (49500) for exclusive use by Oracle VM Manager. Do not use the bundled database for other applications.

In order to prevent potential conflicts with existing MySQL installations, The Oracle VM Manager installer will require that you remove any existing MySQL installation prior to installation. If you are running MySQL on the system where you are installing Oracle VM Manager, the installer will exit to allow you to backup any existing databases and remove the existing MySQL instance before proceeding with the installation.

If you select to use an Oracle Database type as your backend repository, you must install and configure it for use according to the documentation packaged with it prior to installing Oracle VM Manager. When running the Oracle VM Manager installer you can select to perform a Custom installation, which allows you to specify the parameters that are required in order to connect to the existing database. The Oracle VM Manager installer does not install any Oracle Database itself.

You should not use an Oracle XE database as the Oracle VM Manager repository. Oracle XE is not a supported product and Oracle Support Services cannot provide bug fixes or patches for this product. You should use MySQL or Oracle Database Standard or Enterprise Edition. Oracle VM Manager includes a restricted-use license of the Oracle Database (Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition) for use as the Oracle VM Manager Management Repository only (see Oracle Database ).

MySQL Enterprise Edition

MySQL Enterprise Edition is included for use as the Oracle VM Manager Management Repository. Use of MySQL Enterprise Edition, including without limitation MySQL Enterprise Backup, is restricted to use with Oracle VM Manager.
