Introducing Oracle8 Enterprise Edition

This chapter introduces you to Oracle8 Enterprise Edition.

Specific topics discussed are:

Overview

Oracle8 Enterprise Edition for Windows NT is an Object Relational Database Management System (ORDBMS). Oracle8 Enterprise Edition client and server software operates on a personal computer (PC), running on the following Microsoft operating systems:

Operating System  Oracle Client software  Oracle Server software

4GB RAM Tuning (4GT)

Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition includes a new capability called 4GB RAM Tuning (4GT). This capability allows memory-intensive applications running on Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition to utilize up to 50% more RAM on Intel Architecture servers. It does this by reducing the potential RAM allocated to the NT kernel from 2 GB to 1 GB, and increasing the potential RAM allocated to processes from 2 GB to 3 GB. Note that this capability is not currently available on any other Microsoft operating system.

To use 4GT for Oracle7 Server release 7.3.3 you must run the Windows NT IMAGECFG.EXE tool at the MS-DOS command prompt:

C:\> IMAGECFG -L ORACLE73.EXE

For Oracle Server releases 7.3.4, 8.0.3, 8.0.4, 8.0.5, and 8.0.6 there is no additional Oracle configuration required to take advantage of this capability, nor is there a requirement that this feature be enabled in order to use Oracle Server.

Additional Information:

See your Microsoft operating system documentation for more information on using 4GB RAM Tuning and the IMAGECFG.EXE tool, or visit:

http://www.microsoft.com

What Products are on the CD-ROM?

Licensing Information

Although the Oracle8 Enterprise Edition for Windows NT CD-ROM in your kit contains many Oracle products, you may install and use only those products for which you have purchased licenses. For additional licensing information, refer to the Global License Terms booklet in your kit.

Oracle Support Services does not provide support for products where licenses have not been purchased.

CD-ROM Installation Sequence for Oracle Products

IMPORTANT:

If you purchased Oracle Web Application Server, install the Oracle Web Application Server CD-ROM first.

If you attempt to install the Oracle Web Application Server CD-ROM after installing Oracle8 Enterprise Edition, dialog boxes appear requesting if you want to downgrade the software components. Select No to those messages. Also, Oracle Web Application Server must be installed and running prior to installing Oracle8 ConText Cartridge Viewer Cartridge and/or Oracle8 ConText Configuration Manager.

Choosing Which Oracle Products to Install

When you run Oracle Installer, a dialog box displays several product installation options. If you choose Oracle8 Enterprise Edition or Oracle8 Client, a group of products are automatically installed. If you choose Custom Installation, you can selectively install products. Available options depend upon the operating system you are using:

Legato Storage Manager (LSM)

Using Oracle8 Recovery Manager (RMAN80) for Oracle database backups requires the installation of a media management product in order to back up and restore from tape storage. You can choose to install the media management product supplied with Oracle8 Enterprise Edition, which is LSM, or use a third-party media management product that also complies with Oracle's Backup Solutions Program (BSP). LSM also includes a scaled-down version of Legato NetWorker. LSM is installed through Install Shield; it is not installed by Oracle Installer. You are given the option of installing LSM during installation. For more information on this product, call toll free (1) 888-8-LEGATO in the United States of America, or visit Legato's Oracle backup and recovery Web site:

Net8 is a software layer that is required to communicate between Oracle clients and servers. It provides both client/server and server/server communications across any network. It enables client tools to access, modify, share, and store data on Oracle8 Enterprise Edition servers over a network. See Net8 Getting Started for Windows NT and Windows 95/98 for detailed information on each Net8 product.

Oracle Protocol Adapters

Oracle Protocol Adapters map Transparent Network Substrate (TNS) functionality to industry-standard protocols used in client/server connections. Each protocol adapter maps the equivalent functions between TNS and a specific protocol. Net8 Client and not Oracle Installer installs Oracle Named Pipes Protocol Adapter, and auto-detects TCP/IP and SPX. TP/IP and SPX are only installed in the installation packages if the appropriate software is detected on your system. If you explicitly select these Oracle Protocol Adapters in the Custom Installation option, they will be installed even if you do not have the appropriate software on your system. See Net8 Getting Started for Windows NT and Windows 95/98 for detailed information on each protocol adapter.
