Indicates variables, including the variable portion of a file name. Italic is also used to indicate a Web site and the title of a document. 

Forward slash (/) before a directory name 

/usr/local/bin 

Indicates a subdirectory on a UNIX platform. 

Backslash (\) before a directory name 

C:\WINNT\system32 

Indicates a subdirectory on a Windows platform. 

$ORACLE_HOME  

$ORACLE_HOME/sysman/admin 

Represents the top-level directory structure in which your Oracle software is installed on a UNIX platform. 

ORACLE_HOME  

ORACLE_HOME\sysman\admin 

Represents the hard-drive letter and top-level directory structure in which your Oracle software is installed on a Windows platform. 

HOME_NAME  

OracleHOME_NAMEManagementServer 

Represents the name of an Oracle home.
