Configuring Database Connectivity

Oracle. Verify that the Oracle Net8 or Net9 database connectivity software, as appropriate, is installed on each machine, according to the Oracle documentation. For database connectivity software requirements, see System Requirements and Supported Platforms on Siebel SupportWeb.

On the Solaris platform, when using an Oracle 8i database, use the HOSTNAME ADAPTER technique for name resolution which bypasses the tnsnames.ora file. This method prevents a known limitation of Solaris that causes Siebel Application Object Managers to intermittently report a Login Failed error when the open File Descriptor limit of 256 is reached. For details, see Alert 881 on Siebel SupportWeb. This limitation does not apply to Oracle 9i on Solaris platform.

Siebel Server connections to the Oracle Database are made through dedicated server processes rather than through Oracle MTS; the use of MTS may negatively affect performance.

Use the Oracle Net8 (or Net9) Easy Configuration utility to define a database alias with the proper connection information for your Siebel Database Server. Record the connect string in Deployment Planning Worksheet. You specify this connect string when installing the Siebel Server.

NOTE:  Siebel applications support the Oracle 32-bit client. Therefore, if you have installed the Oracle 64-bit client on your Siebel Server, you must add $ORACLE_HOME/lib32 instead of $ORACLE_HOME/lib to your LD_LIBRARY_PATH (Solaris), SHLIB_PATH (HP-UX), or LIBPATH (AIX) variables.

DB2 UDB for Windows and UNIX. Define a database alias with the proper connection information for your database. This alias will be the connect string used when installing the Siebel Server. Record the connect string in Deployment Planning Worksheet. You specify this connect string when installing the Siebel Server.

Use either the DB2 Client Configuration Assistant or the Command Line Processor (CLP) to define your database alias. For more information, see DB2 Universal Database for UNIX or IBM DB2 Universal Database Command Reference.

DB2 UDB for z/OS and OS/390. For information on configuring database connectivity for DB2 UDB for z/OS and OS/390, see Implementing Siebel eBusiness Applications on DB2 UDB for z/OS and OS/390.
