Upgrading the Siebel Upgrade Wizard

The Siebel Upgrade Wizard is a stand-alone program that is invoked to carry out the installation of the upgrade kits for Siebel Clients as well as Siebel Regional Node Servers. It is also used to carry out the initialization process for a regional database as well as local databases of Mobile Web Client users. Both siebupg.exe and siebupg1.exe are stand-alone executables for the Siebel Upgrade Wizard.

In most cases, siebupg.exe and siebupg1.exe are identical. But during an upgrade, the Siebel Client always calls siebupg1.exe to carry out the job. In the case of a Siebel Regional Node Server upgrade, the Siebel administrator should manually copy siebupg.exe to siebupg1.exe before invoking siebupg1.exe.

The reason that there are two stand-alone executables is that some upgrades involve upgrading the Siebel Upgrade Wizard itself. A new executable cannot be copied to the file name and location of an executable that is currently running. Therefore, the Siebel client runs the siebupg1.exe version of the Siebel Upgrade Wizard to perform the upgrade, and the upgrade process copies the new siebupg.exe version of the Siebel Upgrade Wizard to the correct location for future use.

When a new siebupg.exe executable has been successfully copied to the correct location, the client automatically restarts and automatically copies the new siebupg.exe file to siebupg1.exe, making both executables for the Siebel Upgrade Wizard current and identical. The upgrade process then resumes using the siebupg1.exe executable.
