Understanding Services

Publishing and locating live services is the heart of what the Registry is all about. However a registry needs to do more than direct users to services and endpoints. A registry also needs to guarantee that the services published within are actual, are stable, conform to certain minimum standards, and are trackable in terms of their evolution through releases and lifecycles.

While Web services Interoperability and Reliability specifications have been worked out by the industry in recent years, establishing and implementing policies for certifying such service aspects is left to the Registry administrator.

Services in the Business Service Console are a mapping of the UDDI businessService type. Both of these are ultimately mappings of a WSDL document. However a Service in the Business Service Console is designed to be both less and more. It is less in that, in the BSC, Service record publishing and Service record retrieval and display is restricted to only the most essential data fields. It is more in that additional information about states and aspects of the Service can be added to the record to aid Architects, Administrators, Managers and Developers in deciding which service is most suitable and dependable for their needs.
