About Database Synchronization

Database synchronization applies to you if you are a remote user of the Siebel application. You must synchronize data on a regular basis to maintain the database on your remote laptop.

The copy of the database on your laptop is generally called a local database. The Siebel application is the interface that allows you to add and manipulate information in the database. Using a dial-up connection, you synchronize your local database with the server database by sending data to the server and receiving data from the server. Figure 39 shows the synchronization process.

For example, if you add several new opportunities to your local database, then you must synchronize this data, which is on your laptop, with the data on the server. This synchronization transfers the new data to the server. If, on the server, you are added as a team member to a new account, then you must synchronize data so that the data for this new account is added to your local database. For information about setting up synchronization preferences, see Siebel Remote and Replication Manager Administration Guide.

You synchronize data regularly for the following reasons:

  • To make sure your local database is current.
  • To make sure the total time to synchronize is as short as possible. Regular synchronization results in shorter synchronization times.
  • To share updates with colleagues.

NOTE:  You must synchronize data in a timely manner so that the most up-to-date information resides on your laptop. Each organization has its own guidelines for the synchronization process.
