Once you decide to use Oracle ASM with Oracle, you should choose the appropriate Oracle ASM instance. You can use the following diagram to find out if you require single instance Oracle ASM or clustered instance Oracle ASM.

Note - Single instance Oracle ASM is not supported with Oracle 11g release 2 or 12c. For these releases, you must only use clustered Oracle ASM.
