Chapter 1 Netra j 2.0 Installation Guide

This guide describes how to install the Netra` j 2.0 software from the CD-ROM and how to perform the initial configuration of the Netra j server. It includes instructions for a quick installation and a customized installation for experienced system administrators. In addition, it includes a form you can use to gather the information you will need for setting up network computers. This guide contains the following main topics:

After completing the installation and the Network Computer Configuration Form, refer to the Netra j 2.0 Administrator's Guide for instructions on using Netra j 2.0. This guide is available on the Netra j 2.0 CD-ROM and accessible on the Web at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/indexes/documentation/index.html.


Note -

If you have downloaded the Netra j 2.0 software from the Netra j 2.0 purchase website, go directly to the README file that was downloaded with the software for installation instructions.


Hardware and Software Requirements

You can install Netra j 2.0 software on any SPARC` system running the Sun` Solaris` operating environment, version 2.5.1 or later. Solaris 2.6 systems should have the full Solaris 2.6 distribution installed, as opposed to subsets such as the end-user cluster.

You will need an HTML-based web browser to administer Netra j 2.0. HotJava` Browser is provided as part of this software.

Netra j 2.0 requires a web server at port 80. Netra j automatically configures a Sun` WebServer` web server at port 80 during the installation, unless another web server is already running on port 80.

Netra j uses Sun WebServer as the administration web server on port 81. This web server must not be replaced by any other web server. For more information, see "Netra j Web Servers".

Some systems have additional requirements, as shown in Table 1-1.

 If you are installing Netra j 2.0 ... Make sure your system has the following.
 As an upgrade to Netra i 3.1 or 3.1.1 Sun packages SUNWadmap and SUNWscpu These packages can be installed from the Netra Recovery CD-ROM, which accompanied the Netra i product CD-ROM.
 On a 2.5.1 system and you plan to administer the HotJava Views Calendar  The Common Desktop Environment (CDE) CDE is available on the Solaris Update CD-ROM.

Installing Netra j 2.0

After mounting the Netra j 2.0 CD-ROM following the procedure below, you can install Netra j 2.0 using either the quick installation or the customized installation. The quick installation quickly installs the Netra j 2.0 software, including all patches, on your machine. The customized installation is for experienced system administrators who need to customize the Netra j 2.0 installation.


Note -

If you are upgrading to Netra j 2.0 from a previous Netra version, go to "Upgrading to Netra j 2.0 ".


To Mount the Netra j 2.0 CD-ROM
  1. At a Command Tool prompt, enter the root directory as "superuser."

    % su Password: #

  2. Verify that Volume Manager is running.

    # ps -ef | grep vold

    If Volume Manager is running, it will be listed as a vold process similar to the following:

     root 215 1 0 07:52:06 ? 0:01 /usr/sbin/vold

    If the vold process is not running, initiate Volume Manager. For instructions on how to do this, refer to the Solaris Handbook for SMCC Peripherals available at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/indexes/documentation/index.html. From the main web page, click the following links in the order shown.

  3. When Volume Manager is running, insert the Netra j 2.0 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

    The Volume Manager automatically creates a mount point for the CD-ROM.

To Perform a Quick Installation
  1. Change to the /cdrom/cdrom0/Tools directory.

    # cd /cdrom/cdrom0/Tools

  2. Use the netra_install script to install the Netra j software.

    # ./netra_install

  3. If a web server was already set up at port 80 prior to the Netra j 2.0 installation, see "Netra j Web Servers".

After you complete the installation, see "Running Netra j 2.0".

To Perform a Customized Installation
  1. Change to the /usr/sbin directory.

    # cd /usr/sbin

  2. Start Admintool by typing swmtool.

    # ./swmtool

    The Admintool: Software window is displayed.

  3. Choose Edit Add.

    The Admintool: Set Source Media window is displayed.

  4. Select CD with Volume Management if you are running Volume Management or CD without Volume Management as the software location.

  5. Type the path to the source media in the CD path.

    /cdrom/cdrom0/Product

    The Admintool: Add Software window is displayed.

  6. Make sure the Netra j box is checked.

  7. Check the Solaris 2.5.1 Add-ons box if your system is running Solaris 2.5.1.

    If your system is running Solaris 2.6, it already has all the Add-on software.

  8. Optionally, click Customize to deselect packages from either the Netra j or the Solaris Add-ons cluster.

    All of the Netra j 2.0 software packages are listed in Admintool.

  9. Click Add.

    The Netra j packages are installed on your system.


    Note -

    Ignore the license warnings from the IMAP server during the installation.


  10. Choose File Exit to close Admintool.

  11. If a web server was already set up at port 80 prior to the Netra j 2.0 installation, see "Netra j Web Servers".

To install Solaris 2.5.1 or Solaris 2.6 patches, see "Installing Solaris Patches".

After you complete the installation, see "Running Netra j 2.0".

Upgrading to Netra j 2.0

The Netra j 2.0 CD-ROM includes upgrade scripts to simplify the upgrade from either Netra j or Netra i.


Note -

Upgrading from Netra j 1.0 (developer's release) is not supported.


Table 1-2 shows the locations for upgrade instructions. Find your current platform and Netra level in the columns on the left. Your instructions are determined by whether you are planning to upgrade from Solaris 2.5.1 to 2.6.

Note -

After an upgrade, the password to Netra j Administration is changed to setup.


Netra i Third-Party Product Support

Table 1-3 shows which Netra i 3.1/3.2 third-party products are supported after an upgrade to Netra j 2.0. Supported products are determined by the Netra j 2.0 server platform after the upgrade (whether or not the platform itself was upgraded). Note that after an upgrade from Netra i 3.1 to Netra j 2.0 on Solaris 2.6, none of the third-party security products are supported.


Note -

After the upgrade, use Netscape Navigator to administer Netscape Enterprise Server. HotJava Browser cannot be used for Netscape Enterprise Server administration.

To Upgrade to Netra j 2.0 and Solaris 2.6
  1. If your Netra server hardware includes a diskette drive, insert a blank diskette into the drive.

  2. On the Netra j CD-ROM, change to the Tools directory.

    # cd /cdrom/cdrom0/Tools

  3. Use the netra_save script to save the existing Netra configuration to a diskette.

    # ./netra_save


    Note -

    If your Netra server hardware does not include a diskette drive, save the Netra configuration to the local file system, then copy the file /var/tmp/netra/netraj2_0.tar to tape or to a remote machine on the local area network.


  4. Perform a file system backup and install the Solaris 2.6 Entire Distribution (size 641 MB) from the Solaris 2.6 CD-ROM.

    Follow the instructions in the Solaris Advanced Installation Guide, which is available at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/indexes/documentation/index.html. From the main web page, click the following links in the order shown.

    • System Administration

    • Solaris System Administrator Collection Vol 1.

  5. If you copied the file /var/tmp/netra/netraj2_0.tar to tape or to a remote machine in Step 1, restore the file to /var/tmp/netra/netraj2_0.tar on the Netra file system.

  6. Use the netra_install script to install the Netra j software.

    # ./netra_install

  7. Use the netra_restore script to restore the Netra configuration.

    # ./netra_restore

  8. If Netra j 2.0 will be used to administer JavaStation` brick models, see "Brick Model Clients".

  9. If a web server was already set up at port 80 prior to the Netra j 2.0 upgrade, see "Netra j Web Servers".

    If your previous Netra server contained user web pages created as part of an HTML document hierarchy, you should now restore these files using the file system backup media created as part of Step 1.

To Upgrade to Netra j 2.0 Without Upgrading Solaris

Note -

HotJava Views configuration information is not preserved in an upgrade from Netra j 1.1 to Netra j 2.0.


  1. On the Netra j CD-ROM, change to the Tools directory.

    # /cdrom/cdrom0/Tools

  2. Use the netra_upgrade script to save the Netra configuration, remove the existing Netra software, install Netra j 2.0, and restore the Netra configuration.

    # ./netra_upgrade

  3. If Netra j 2.0 will be used to administer JavaStation brick models, see "Brick Model Clients".

  4. If a web server was already set up at port 80 prior to the Netra j 2.0 upgrade, see "Netra j Web Servers".

Installation Notes

This section contains background information on Netra j and special installation instructions.

Brick Model Clients

If you are upgrading to Netra j 2.0 from a previous Netra version and are using Netra j to administer JavaStation brick model (JavaStation with microSPARC`-II) clients, you must modify the /etc/bootparams file.

The JavaOS directory has changed from:

 /export/root/JavaDesktop

to:

 /export/root/javaos/JDM1

Thus for each JavaStation, you must change the following line in the /etc/bootparams file:

javastation_name root=bootserver:/export/root/JavaDesktop boottype=:js

to:

javastation_name root=bootserver:/export/root/javaos/JDM1 boottype=:js

Installing Solaris Patches

When you install Netra j 2.0 using the install script, software patches for Solaris 2.5.1 and Solaris 2.6 are installed in the /netraj_install_directory/Patches directory. If you use Admintool to install Netra j 2.0, you need to follow this procedure to install the patches.


Note -

Man pages for the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) are located in the /netraj_install_directory/Patches/5.5.1/iss_man_dhcp_sparc-01 directory.


To Install Solaris Patches
  1. At a Command Tool prompt, enter the root directory as "superuser."

    % su Password: #

  2. Change to the patch directory for your version of Solaris.

    • If your system is running Solaris 2.5.1, type:

      # cd /netraj_install_directory/Patches/5.5.1

    • If your system is running Solaris 2.6, type:

      # cd /netraj_install_directory/Patches/5.6

  3. Type ls.

    The patch numbers are listed as subdirectories.

  4. Change to a patch subdirectory.

For example:

# cd 103891-05

  1. Type the following command.

    # ./installpatch .

Netra j Web Servers

Netra j requires two web servers. One web server resides at port 81 and serves the pages of the Netra j Administration Interface to a web browser. The other resides at port 80 and delivers the HotJava Views application to JavaStation computers during the JavaStation boot sequence.

Sun WebServer software is installed on your machine during the Netra j installation, and Netra j configures web servers at ports 80 and 81 as follows:

To Configure an Existing Web Server for Use With Netra j
  1. Create a symbolic link called jdt from the web server's document root directory to the HotJava Views document directory.

    # ln -s /opt/SUNWjdt/lib web_server_document_root/jdt

  2. Create a symbolic link called jdt from the web server's cgi-bin directory to the HotJava Views cgi-bin directory.

    # ln -s /opt/SUNWjdt/cgi-bin web_server_cgi_bin_directory/jdt

  3. Provide the web server with access to cgi programs and documents.

    In the access control file for the web server, provide access to web_server_document_root and to web_server_cgi_bin_directory.

Netra j 2.0 and NIS Kit 1.2 AnswerBook Collections

The AnswerBook collections listed in Table 1-4 reside in the Misc directory on the Netra j 2.0 CD-ROM but are not automatically installed with Netra j 2.0.

To install an AnswerBook collection, mount the Netra j 2.0 CD-ROM as described on "To Mount the Netra j 2.0 CD-ROM" and type the following commands, where package_name is a package name listed in Table 1-4.

# cd /cdrom/cdrom0/Misc# pkgadd -d . package_name


Note -

For further information on installing an AnswerBook collection, or for installing AnswerBook on a server, refer to the Information Library for Solaris 2.6 (SPARC Platform Edition).


GO-Joe Server Software

GO-Joe server software resides in the Misc directory on the Netra j 2.0 CD-ROM but is not automatically installed with Netra j 2.0. This software should be installed on the JavaStation X server, which can be the Netra j server itself or another system on the network. GO-Joe server software can be installed using either Admintool or pkgadd.

To install GO-Joe server software on a non-Solaris system, follow the vendor's instructions for adding a package to the system.


Note -

GO-Joe client software is installed on the Netra j server during the Netra j 2.0 installation. For information on setting up JavaStation computers to use GO-Joe client software, refer to the Netra j Administrator's Guide.


To Install GO-Joe Server Software Using Admintool
  1. Insert the Netra j 2.0 CD-ROM into the X server's CD-ROM drive.

  2. Mount the CD-ROM as described on "To Mount the Netra j 2.0 CD-ROM".

  3. Change to the /usr/sbin directory.

    # cd /usr/sbin

  4. Start Admintool by typing swmtool.

    # ./swmtool

    The Admintool: Software window is displayed.

  5. Choose Edit Add.

    The Admintool: Set Source Media window is displayed.

  6. Select CD with Volume Management if you are running Volume Management or CD without Volume Management as your Software Location.

  7. Type the path to the source media in the CD path.

    /cdrom/cdrom0/Misc

    The Admintool: Add Software window is displayed.

  8. Check the GO-Joe Host Software box.

  9. Click Add.

    The GO-Joe server software is installed on your system.

  10. Choose File Exit to close Admintool.

To Install GO-Joe Server Software Using pkgadd
  1. Insert the Netra j 2.0 CD-ROM into the X server's CD-ROM drive.

  2. Mount the CD-ROM as described on "To Mount the Netra j 2.0 CD-ROM".

  3. Type the following commands:

    # cd /cdrom/cdrom0/Misc# pkgadd -d . SUNWgjvxs

Running Netra j 2.0

This section describes the Netra j 2.0 Solaris user account and explains how to start Netra j 2.0 and perform the initial configuration, which is required the first time you start Netra j 2.0.

Netra j 2.0 Solaris User Login Account

The Netra j 2.0 installation creates a Solaris user account called setup that automatically launches HotJava Browser, the browser required to operate HotJava Views Administration pages in the Netra j 2.0 interface. HotJava Views Administration pages use features of the Java` Developer's Kit (JDK`) 1.1 that are not currently supported by industry-standard browsers.

All other Netra j Administration pages can be operated from any industry-standard browser. Use HotJava Browser for the best results.

To Log in to the Netra j 2.0 Account
  1. After installing Netra j 2.0, log out of your Netra j system.

    # logout

  2. Log in as setup and type setup as the password.

    login: setup Password:

    HotJava Browser is launched and the Login Required window is displayed.


    Note -

    If you do not log in as setup, follow the instructions in "Starting Netra j 2.0".


  3. Type setup in both the Login and Password fields.

    HotJava Browser displays the Initial Configuration page.

  4. Select Edit Preferences Display.

    The Display Preferences window is displayed.

  5. Change the Navigation Buttons and Locator settings from None to At Top, and click OK.

  6. Perform the Initial Configuration.

    See "Configuring Netra j 2.0".

Starting Netra j 2.0

If you log in to your Netra j system using an account other than setup, start Netra j 2.0 as described below.

To Start Netra j 2.0
  1. Start a browser:

    To operate the HotJava Views Administration pages in the Netra j 2.0 interface, you must use HotJava Browser. To start HotJava Browser, type:

    % /opt/SUNWnhjb/bin/hotjava

    Make sure the preference for unsigned applet security is set to "Medium" and the preference for signed applet security is set to "Low."

    All other Netra j Administration functions can be executed from any industry-standard browser. Use HotJava Browser for the best results.

  2. Open the following URL location:

    http://hostname:81/

    A login window is displayed.

  3. Type setup for both the User ID and password.

    The Initial Configuration page displays the required administration modules in the order in which they should be configured.

Configuring Netra j 2.0

The first time you start Netra j 2.0, you must perform the initial configuration.

To Perform the Initial Configuration
  1. Click the highlighted System Defaults option.

    The System Defaults Administration page is displayed with the default time zone and default system locale.

  2. If necessary, select a new default system time zone from the pick list and then click OK.

  3. Click the forward arrow icon to advance to the next configuration task, or click the Home hyperlink and select the highlighted Host Name option.

    The Host Name Administration page is displayed.

  4. Type the name of the server.

    A message to restart the server is displayed. The server can be restarted once configuration is completed.


    Note -

    If the server is restarted at this time, the initial login sequence (with the new host name) must be repeated to load the Initial Configuration page. At this point, the Host Name option will not be shown as one of the remaining configuration tasks. Proceed to the next administration module.


  5. Click the forward arrow icon to advance to the next configuration task.

    The System Administrator Alias Administration page is displayed.

    The System Administrator Alias is the list of people who will receive mail addressed to the system administrator (who is also known as the UNIX root user). Each item on the list must be a valid mail address. Valid alias members who cannot be reached at configuration time will be added to the alias, but any mail sent to that alias will not be delivered.

  6. Type the names of aliases for the system administrator and then click OK.

    Separate each name with a comma.

  7. Click the forward arrow icon to advance to the next configuration task.

    The Root Password Administration page is displayed.

    Netra j provides a superuser account called root. When the Netra j server is accessed by the root user, many of the restrictions that apply to regular user accounts are removed. For example, the root user can read, write, or delete any file, or change the system configuration. To protect these privileges, the root account has a password.

  8. Type the current root password, if any, into the upper field.

  9. Type the new root password in the middle and lower fields and click OK.

  10. Click the forward arrow icon to advance to the next configuration task.

    The Administration Password Administration page is displayed.

  11. Type the password setup into the upper field.

  12. Type the new administration password in the middle and lower fields and then click OK.


    Note -

    If the Administration Web Server password is changed, the browser connection must be authenticated.


  13. Use the forward arrow icon to advance to the next configuration task.

    A browser window opens, indicating that authorization has failed.

  14. Click OK.

  15. In the Password Window, type setup in the User ID field and type the new password in the Password field.

  16. Click OK.

    The Add Ethernet TCP/IP Interface Administration page is displayed.

  17. Type the Host Name or the Host Address of the interface into the upper field.

    The host name should exist in the Local Name Service.

  18. Type the netmask into the lower field.

    If you do not know the netmask, leave this field blank.

  19. Click OK.

  20. Click the forward arrow icon to advance to the Main Administration page.

    The Main Administration page is displayed.

To Complete the Configuration
  1. Use the displayed modules to perform any further system configuration tasks, such as setting up mail aliases, configuring a name service, or setting routing options.

    Refer to the relevant chapters in the Netra j Administrator's Guide for additional information on each administration module.

  2. Once server configuration is complete, save the configuration information as follows:

    1. Insert a blank diskette into the disk drive.

      If there is no disk drive in the server, proceed to Step b.

    2. Click System Administration: Save and Restore Configuration.

    3. If you are saving the configuration to diskette, click Save configuration to diskette; otherwise, click Save configuration to file system.

  3. If the server was not restarted after entering the host name, do the following:

    1. Click System Administration: Restart and Shutdown.

      The Restart and Shutdown Administration page is displayed.

    2. Click the Restart option.

    3. Click OK to proceed with the restart process.

      The server will be restarted with the new configuration.

You are now ready to set up JavaStation clients in your network. To begin the configuration, complete the Network Computer Configuration Form that follows.

Network Computer Configuration Form

This form shows the information you must have on hand when you set up network computers in your network. Complete this form and then refer to the Netra j Administrator's Guide to complete the network computer configuration.

 Field Name  Description Your System Information
 NIS Domain Name The NIS domain in which the network computers reside.  
 NIS Server Address (optional) The host address(es) of NIS servers for the network computers.  
 DNS Domain Name The DNS domain in which the network computers reside.  
 DNS Server Address The host address of the DNS server for the network computers.  
 Boot Server Address  The host address of the network computer boot server on the local network. The boot server provides DHCP, TFTP, and NFS services.  
 Time Server Address The IP address of a server supporting the NTP protocol.  
 Router Address (optional) The host address(es) of the routers to be used by the network computers. If not specified, the JavaOS on each network computer will broadcast looking for a router.  
 Lease TimeThe duration (in days) of an IP address lease. IP addresses are leased to network computers, not assigned permanently. For more information, refer to the Netra j Administrator's Guide.  
 Lease Negotiation A yes or no value that specifies whether the boot server renews the IP address leases of clients requesting lease renewal.  
 Network Interfaces A list of the network interfaces accessible to the Netra j system. Each interface is associated with a physical device. However, a physical device can have multiple network interfaces.  
 Input Method Server A server with a language engine to interpret the keyboard input method (for Korean, Chinese, and Japanese languages only). This server must be running a localized version of Solaris.  
 Input Method Port The port where the language engine is accessible.  
 Time Zone  The time zone in which the network computers are located. 
 Fonts Server (optional) The host address or host name of the fonts server for the network computers. A fonts server is required if alternate fonts will be used by the network computers. For more information, refer to the Netra j Administrator's Guide.  
FONTS Directory (optional)  The directory location of the fonts for the network computers.  
 Localized Resources Server (optional)The host address or host name of the localized resources server for the network computers. Localized resources, such as keyboard mapping tables, support network computer operation in different languages. For more information, refer to the Netra j Administrator's Guide.  
 Localized Resources Directory (optional) The directory location of the localized resources for the network computers.  
 Login Locales List The list of locales presented as choices to the user logging on to a network computer.  
JavaOS` Command Line (optional) The JavaOS command line is a formatted text string containing definitions of either JavaOS or system properties. These properties control characteristics of JavaOS such as the language it uses. For more information, refer to the Netra j Administrator's Guide.
