Uninstalling SyMON and Sun Management Center from the Solaris Platform

If you have Solstice SyMON 1.x, Sun Enterprise SyMON 2.x, or Sun Management Center 3.x software installed on your system, and you do not want to preserve your configuration data, you must uninstall the SyMON or Sun Management Center software before you can install Sun Management Center 3.5 software.

Uninstalling Solstice SyMON 1.x or Enterprise SyMON 2.x

Use of this procedure deletes all Sun Management Center 1.x data, including any custom rules and alarms that you have defined. If you want to preserve your data for use with a later version of Sun Management Center, follow the procedures in Upgrading from Solstice SyMON 1.x and Sun Enterprise SyMON 2.x Software.

To Uninstall Solstice SyMON 1.x or Enterprise SyMON 2.x
  1. Log in as root on the machine where the SyMON server is installed.

  2. Uninstall the SyMON software as directed by the SyMON documentation.

  3. Ensure that all components have been uninstalled.

    Type the following command to list all Sun Management Center packages:


    # pkginfo -c symon
    

    If any packages are listed, uninstall each package using the pkgrm command. For example:


    # pkginfo -c symon
    SUNWesse
    # pkgrm SUNWesse
    

Uninstalling Sun Management Center 2.x

Use of this procedure deletes all Sun Management Center 2.x data, including any custom rules and alarms that you have defined. If you want to preserve your data and upgrade to Sun Management Center 3.5, follow the procedures in Upgrading From Sun Management Center 2.1 or 2.1.1.

To Uninstall Sun Management Center 2.x
  1. Log in as root on the machine where the Sun Management Center 2.x server is installed.

  2. Remove T3 device configuration information if T3 devices are present.

    If you have not installed and set up the add-on Monitoring and Management of A5x00 and T3 Devices, skip this step. Go to Step 3.

    If you monitor and manage T3 storage devices using the Monitoring and Management of A5x00 and T3 Devices add-on, remove T3 device configuration information before you uninstall Sun Management Center. For instructions, see Removing T3 Device Configuration If Present in Chapter 4, Preparing Systems for Sun Management Center Upgrade and Installation.

  3. Uninstall the Sun Management Center 2.x software.

    Type the command /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-uninst


    Note –

    The Sun Management Center 2.x uninstall process removes the Sun Management Center 2.x software, but does not remove the Sun Management Center 2.x data.


  4. Delete the Sun Management Center 2.x directories:


    # rm -fr /opt/SUNWsymon
    # rm -fr /var/opt/SUNWsymon
    # rm -fr /etc/opt/SUNWsymon
    
  5. Ensure that all components have been uninstalled.

    Type the following command to list all Sun Management Center packages:


    # pkginfo -c symon
    

    If any packages are listed, uninstall each package using the pkgrm command. For example:


    # pkginfo -c symon
    SUNWesse
    # pkgrm SUNWesse
    

Uninstalling Sun Management Center 3.0

The Sun Management Center 3.0 uninstall process provides you with the opportunity to save your Sun Management Center 3.0 configuration data. If you are going to upgrade to Sun Management Center 3.5, make sure that you save the Sun Management Center 3.0 configuration data when prompted.

To Uninstall Sun Management Center 3.0
  1. Log in as root on the machine where the Sun Management Center 3.0 server is installed.

  2. Remove T3 device configuration information if T3 devices are present.

    If you have not installed and set up the add-on Monitoring and Management of A5x00 and T3 Devices, skip this step. Go to Step 3.

    If you monitor and manage T3 storage devices using the Monitoring and Management of A5x00 and T3 Devices add-on, remove T3 device configuration information before you uninstall Sun Management Center. For instructions, see Removing T3 Device Configuration If Present in Chapter 4, Preparing Systems for Sun Management Center Upgrade and Installation.

  3. Uninstall Sun Management Center 3.0.

    Type the following command:


    # /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-uninst
    

    You are notified that the utility removes all of the Sun Management Center packages and asked whether you want to continue.

    • Type n to cancel the uninstall process.

    • Type y to continue.

      You are asked if you want to preserve your existing data.

  4. Choose whether to preserve your Sun Management Center 3.0 configuration data.

    • If you do not want to preserve the existing Sun Management Center 3.0 data, type n. You are notified that the existing data will be removed.

    • If you want to preserve the existing Sun Management Center 3.0 data and migrate the data to Sun Management Center 3.5, type y. You are notified that the existing data will not be removed.

    Any Sun Management Center 3.0 processes that are currently running are stopped. The uninstall process then uninstalls the Sun Management Center 3.0 software.


    Note –

    During the uninstall process, warning messages might be displayed saying that some packages depend on the packages being removed. Messages could also be displayed informing you that removal of a package was suspended and that intervention is required. You can safely ignore these messages because the uninstall process will remove the packages without your intervention.


    The uninstall process exits to the system prompt when Sun Management Center 3.0 has been uninstalled.


    Caution – Caution –

    If you want to upgrade to Sun Management Center 3.5, do not delete the remaining Sun Management Center 3.0 directories. The Sun Management Center 3.0 directories contain the information that will be migrated to Sun Management Center 3.5.


  5. Upgrade the Solaris operating environment if necessary.

    If you are installing the Sun Management Center 3.5 server, the machine must be running at least the Solaris version 8 or Solaris version 9 developer environment. For additional information, see Prerequisite Packages


    Caution – Caution –

    If you need to upgrade to Solaris version 8 or Solaris version 9, make sure you perform a Solaris upgrade. A fresh Solaris installation reformats the hard drive, which deletes your Sun Management Center 3.0 configuration data. If you perform a fresh Solaris installation, you will not be able to migrate your Sun Management Center 3.0 configuration data to Sun Management Center 3.5.


Uninstalling Sun Management Center 3.5

The graphical es-guiuninst wizard can be used either to uninstall all of a Sun Management Center 3.5 installation, or to uninstall only specific add-on products. es-guiuninst also provides the option to back up the Sun Management Center 3.5 configuration data from the previous 3.5 version. If you chose to back up the configuration data, the Sun Management Center 3.5 installation process detects the backup and asks whether you want to apply the data to the new installation.

You can uninstall specific Sun Management Center 3.5 add-on products by using either the graphical es-guiuninst wizard as described below, or by using the es-uninst command-line script as described in Uninstalling Sun Management Center.


Note –

The Sun Management Center 3.5 installation process detects an existing Sun Management Center 3.0 or Sun Management Center 3.5 installation. If Sun Management Center 3.0 or Sun Management Center 3.5 is detected, the Sun Management Center 3.5 installation process runs the uninstall process of the previous version, and optionally migrates the configuration data from the previous version to the new Sun Management Center 3.5 installation.

If you choose this method to update a machine running the Sun Management Center 3.0 server, the machine must be running at least Solaris version 8.


To Uninstall Sun Management Center 3.5 Using es-guiuninst
  1. Open a terminal window, then type the command xhost + in the terminal window.

    Also, make sure that the DISPLAY environment variable is set to your machine's display.

  2. Log in as root on the machine where the Sun Management Center 3.5 software is installed.

  3. Remove T3 device configuration information if T3 devices are present.

    If you have not installed and set up the add-on Monitoring and Management of A5x00 and T3 Devices, skip this step. Go to Step 4.

    If you monitor and manage T3 storage devices using the Monitoring and Management of A5x00 and T3 Devices add-on, remove T3 device configuration information before you uninstall Sun Management Center. For instructions, see Removing T3 Device Configuration If Present in Chapter 4, Preparing Systems for Sun Management Center Upgrade and Installation.

  4. Type the following command:


    # /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-guiuninst
    

    The Welcome screen appears.

  5. Click Next.

    The Product Selection for Uninstall screen appears.

  6. Select the products to uninstall.

    You are given the choice to uninstall the entire Sun Management Center installation, or to uninstall specific add-on products.

    • To uninstall all of Sun Management Center, select Entire Product Agent, Server, All Add-on Products, and then click Next. The Save Configuration Data screen appears. Go to Step 7.

    • To uninstall specific add-on products, select Add-on Products Only.

      The list of add-on products becomes active. Select the add-on products that you want to uninstall and click Next.

      The Save Configuration Data screen appears. Go to Step 7.

  7. Determine whether to save configuration data.


    Caution – Caution –

    If you do not save the configuration data, your current Sun Management Center packages are uninstalled and the contents of /var/opt/SUNWsymon are removed. In addition, your security keys are overwritten and you must set up all agents again for the agents to work properly. Select Save Data if you want to retain your administrative domain configuration and custom alarm settings in /var/opt/SUNWsymon for subsequent installations or upgrades.


    • If you want to save the configuration data for the selected product or products, select Save Data and click Next.

    • If you do not want to save the configuration data, click Next.

    The Product Removal Confirmation screen appears.

  8. Confirm your selections for uninstall.

    The selections that you made are listed.

    • If the selections are incorrect, click Back to return to the Product Selection for Uninstall screen and make different selections. Then confirm the new selections.

    • Click Next to accept and uninstall the selections.

      The Uninstall Progress screen appears.

      When the selected products have been uninstalled, the Uninstall Summary screen appears.

  9. Click Close to exit the uninstall wizard.

  10. Ensure that all components have been uninstalled.

    Type the following command to list all Sun Management Center packages:


    # pkginfo -c symon
    

    If any packages are listed, uninstall each package using the pkgrm command. For example:


    # pkginfo -c symon
    SUNWesse
    # pkgrm SUNWesse
