Sun Java Enterprise System 2004Q2 Documentation Roadmap |
Sun Java Enterprise System Documentation Roadmap
This roadmap identifies the documentation that is available to help your enterprise install and use Sun Java Enterprise System. This roadmap is organized according to the Java Enterprise System life cycle.
This roadmap divides the Java Enterprise System life cycle into three major stages: analysis and planning, deploying Java Enterprise System, and operating a deployed Java Enterprise System. This roadmap has the following sections for the major stages of the Java Enterprise System life cycle:
- Java Enterprise System Analysis and Planning covers the tasks that you perform to analyze your business needs and plan a Java Enterprise System deployment.
- Java Enterprise System Deployment covers the tasks that you perform to implement your deployment design, which include developing a detailed deployment plan, installing Java Enterprise System component products, and configuring the installed component products.
- Java Enterprise System Operations covers the tasks that you perform regularly to operate Java Enterprise System.
- Java Enterprise System Documentation Set lists all available Java Enterprise System documents.
To use this roadmap, go to the section that covers the life cycle stage that you are interested in. In that section, you will find a list of Java Enterprise System documents covering that stage of the life cycle.
Java Enterprise System Analysis and PlanningJava Enterprise System is composed of software components, such as Sun Java System Directory Server 5 2004Q2 and Sun Java System Identity Server 2004Q2. To meet the computing needs of different enterprises, the Java Enterprise System component products can be installed and configured in many different ways.
Each enterprise assesses its own business needs and plans its own deployment of Java Enterprise System. The optimal deployment for each enterprise depends on the types of enterprise services that Java Enterprise System is providing, the number of users, the kind of hardware that is available, and similar considerations.
Figure 1 shows the flow of tasks for learning about Java Enterprise System and designing a deployment that meets your enterprise computing needs. The documents that cover these tasks are listed in Table 1.

Java Enterprise System DeploymentTo deploy Java Enterprise System, you develop a deployment architecture, and then a detailed, low-level deployment plan. Your detailed deployment plan includes configuration information that you must supply when you run the installer and the configuration tools. After preparing your detailed deployment plan, you install and configure component products. You can also customize the component products and develop custom applications that use Java Enterprise System services.
Figure 2 shows the flow of tasks for deploying Java Enterprise System. The documents that cover these tasks are listed in Table 2.
