Installing a PDU |
This guide describes how to install a power distribution unit (PDU) into the Sun Rack II for the Sun Storage 6580 or 6780 arrays and Sun StorageTek 2500 and 6000 series arrays. Additional Related Documentation is available online at the Sun documentation web site:
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/prod/6780.array#hic
Check the Contents of the PDU Kit |
This PDU system is a cost-reduced dual-grid power option that has been proven in prior Sun designs and has the capacity to distribute sufficient power for storage products mounted in a Sun Rack II.
The PDU kit should contain the following items:

Gather Required Items |
In addition to the items included in the box, you will need the following items:
Mounting brackets A and B are mirror images of each other. When facing the rear of the rack, mounting bracket A is used as the upper mounting bracket on the right side and the lower mounting bracket on the left side. Conversely, mounting bracket B is used as the lower mounting bracket on the right side and the upper mounting bracket on the left side
Note - Mounting brackets A and B can be slipped between the side covers and the rear RETMA rails for assembly, without the need to remove the side covers. |
Read Safety Guidelines |
Follow all safety guidelines as described in:
1. At the back of the rack, align the top of the upper PDU mounting bracket with the top edge of U38 to locate the vertical rail mounting holes you will use to install the top PDU.
Note - A standard mounting rack unit (RU) equals 1.75” (44.45 cm) and consists of three mounting holes in the vertical mounting rails. |
2. Mount the bracket to the outer side of the vertical rail using two 5M x 10MM screws. Use the T30 Torx wrench to tighten the screws.

3. Secure the lower PDU mounting bracket to the bottom of the PDU using one 5M x 10MM screw. Use the Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the screws.

4. Secure the top of the PDU to the upper PDU mounting bracket already installed in the rack using one 5M x 10MM screw. Use the Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the screws.

6. At the back of the rack, align the top of the upper PDU mounting bracket with the top edge of U20 to locate the vertical rail mounting holes you will use to install the bottom PDU.
Note - A standard mounting rack unit (RU) equals 1.75” (44.45 cm) and consists of three mounting holes in the vertical mounting rails. |
7. Repeat Step 2 through Step 5.
1. Locate the power source for the Sun Rack II cabinet and ensure that the circuit breaker for the cabinet’s power source is in the Off position.
2. Locate the two power switches on the front of each PDU and ensure that they are all in the Off position.

3. Feed the PDU power cable to the outside of the rack and insert the plug at the end of the PDU power cable into the power source for the Sun Rack II cabinet.
4. Place the circuit breaker for the cabinet’s power source in the On position
5. Place the two power switches on the front of each PDU in the On position.
