Sun ONE Web Server 6.1 Administrator's Guide

The Cluster Management Tab


Clusters are groups of Sun ONE servers that can be administered from a single Sun ONE administration server. All servers in a cluster must be of the same type (UNIX or Windows). The Administration Server can store a cluster for each type of Sun ONE server.

Clusters enable you to have a central administration server for administering all of your Sun ONE servers. The servers can be installed on any system in a network, but the administration server containing the clusters must have access to the administration server for each of the servers in the cluster.

The Cluster Control Page

The Cluster Control page allows you to configure the remote servers. Most Sun ONE servers let you start, stop, or restart the server by clicking the corresponding buttons on the page. For more information, see Controlling Server Clusters.

The following elements are displayed:

Check Servers to Control. Allows you to select any of the listed servers, select all servers in the cluster, or reset your selection to unselect any servers you have chosen in the page.

Start, Stop, or Restart. Choose the action for the selected remote server from the drop-down list and click OK.

View Access, View Error. Choose the action for the selected remote server from the drop-down list, enter the number of lines to be displayed, and click OK.

Transfer. Transfers information in the selected configuration file from the selected server. Use the drop-down configuration file list to select:

Use the server name drop-down list to select the server these configuration files exist in, and click Transfer.

Reset. Erases your changes and resets the elements in the page to the values they contained before your changes.

Help. Displays online help.


The Add Server Page

The Add Server page allows you to add multiple remote servers to your cluster. Only servers with same administrator server name and Password can be added to the cluster.

If the administration server you’re adding contains more than one server, all the servers that it manages are added to the cluster (you can remove the individual servers later). If the remote administration server contains a cluster, the servers in the remote cluster are not added. For more information, see Adding a Server to a Cluster.

The following elements are displayed:

Admin Server Protocol. Specifies the protocol used when contacting the remote administration server. Choose:

Admin Server Hostname. Specifies the host name of the remote administration server. If your DNS cannot resolve host names, enter the fully qualified host and domain name (for example, type www.sun.com).

Admin Server Port. Specifies the port number of the remote administration server.

Admin User Name. Specifies the administrator user name of the remote administration server.

Admin Password. Specifies the administrator password of the remote administration server.

The master administration server attempts to contact the remote server. When it succeeds, the server identifiers appear on the page for every server installed on a remote administration server. If you have two or more servers on different systems that use the same identifier, the page shows the server identifier and the hostname for the system. If both server identifier and hostname are the same, the page displays the port number. If you do not want all the servers in the cluster, you can remove individual servers.

OK. Saves your entries.

Reset. Erases your changes and resets the elements in the page to the values they contained before your changes.

The Modify Server Page

Use the Modify Server option only to update slave administration port information, after it has been changed on the slave server. If you change the port number of a remote Administration Server in your cluster, you also need to modify the information about that Administration Server stored in the cluster. Any other changes to the slave administration server require you to delete the server, and then add it back into the cluster after the changes have been made. For more information, see Modifying Server Information.

The following elements are displayed:

Check Servers to be Modified. Allows you to select the server you want to change. All servers of that type appear listed by their unique server identifier.

Admin Server Protocol. Specifies the protocol used when contacting the remote administration server. Choose:

Admin Server Hostname. Specifies the host name of the remote administration server. If your DNS cannot resolve host names, enter the fully qualified host and domain name (for example, type www.mozilla.com).

Admin Server Port. Specifies the port number of the remote administration server.

OK. Saves your entries.

Reset. Erases your changes and resets the elements in the page to the values they contained before your changes.

Help. Displays online help.


The Remove Server Page

The Remove Server page allows you to remove a server from a cluster. You can still access the removed servers using their administration server, but you cannot access them from the cluster. For more information, see Removing Servers from a Cluster.

The following elements are displayed:

Check Servers To Be Removed. Allows you the select any of the listed servers, select all servers in the cluster, or reset selection to unselect any servers you have chosen in the page.

OK. Saves your entries.

Reset. Erases your changes and resets the elements in the page to the values they contained before your changes.

Help. Displays online help.


The Add Variables Page

Variables are used when servers in a cluster need to be configured with different values. These values might be macros to define slaves using different port numbers, or plug-ins to define different shlib paths.Once variables are defined, the Administration Server can no longer run independently. For more information, see Adding Variables.

The following elements are displayed:

Variables for. Allows you to select the server you wish to change variables for from the drop-down list.

Option. Allows you the select Add from the drop-down list.

Name. Allows you to enter the file name of the variable you are adding. For example, ‘Port’.

Value. Allows you to specify the value of the variable you are adding. If you are adding a ‘Port’ variable, the value would be the port number.

OK. Saves your entries.

Reset. Erases your changes and resets the elements in the page to the values they contained before your changes.
