Cause

If you put the following lines into /etc/nsswitch.conf

 passwd:     compat
passwd_compat:     nis  

Then when you run passwd, it fails as follows:

server1% passwd passwd: Changing password for khh server1%

NOTE: passwd exits before you get the opportunity to enter a password.
