5 Disk Drive

This chapter explains how to remove and replace a disk drive from the Desktop Storage Module.

Removing a Disk Drive Assembly

Follow Chapter 4 on preparing the tools needed, powering down the system, disconnecting the Desktop Storage Module, removing the cover of the module, and attaching the wrist strap.

Caution -

The hard disk drive contains electronic components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Ordinary amounts of static from your clothes or work environment can destroy the components.

Do not touch the components themselves or any metal parts. Wear a wrist strap when handling the drive.

Do not disconnect the power cord from the system unit's power outlet or from the wall outlet. This connection provides the ground path necessary to safely remove and install the hard disk drive.

Make sure that the power to the system unit is turned off by checking that the green light-emitting diode (LED) at the front of the chassis is not lit and that the fan is not running.

To remove a disk drive assembly:

    1. Place an anti-static mat shiny side up, next to the DSM.

The mat comes with your new disk drive.

    2. Disconnect the select switch cable, internal SCSI cable, and power cable from the disk drive.

Remove the cables by pulling on their connector or pull tab. Do not pull on the cable itself. The following figure shows the connector locations for the disk drive.

Figure 5-1 Disk Drive Connector Locations

    3. Turn the two captive screws on the disk drive bracket at the side of the drive counterclockwise to loosen the screws.

Figure 5-2 Location of Captive Screws

    4. Hold the handles of the drive assembly. Lift the power supply side of the drive assembly slightly. Slide the drive towards the power supply.
    5. Lift the disk drive assembly up and away from the chassis.

Place the disk drive assembly on the antistatic mat.

What's Next

You have removed the disk drive assembly from the DSM. If you removed the disk drive assembly to get access to the defective power supply or I/O bracket assembly, see "Removing a Power Supply" in Chapter 7 or "Removing an I/O Bracket Assembly" in Chapter 8. If you removed the disk drive assembly to get access to the defective LED harness assembly, see "Removing a LED Harness Assembly" in Chapter 9. See the following section if you removed the disk drive assembly because it is defective.

Removing the Bracket and the Handles from the Disk Drive

    1. Turn the disk drive assembly upside down on top of the antistatic mat.
    2. Remove the four screws that secure the disk drive to the bracket.

Place the screws in the container and put the bracket aside.

Figure 5-3 Disk Drive Bracket Assembly

    3. Position the disk drive on its side.

    Figure 5-4 Removing the Handle

    4. Remove the screw that secures the handle to the disk drive.

Place the screw in the container. Put the handle aside.

    5. Remove the other handle.

Position the disk drive on its opposite side, and follow step 4.

Preparing a Replacement Disk Drive

To prepare a replacement disk drive:

    1. Remove the replacement drive from its protective packaging and place the drive component side up on the antistatic mat.

You now have access to the drive controller board.

    2. Remove any jumpers located on the Select switch connector (SCSI address connector).

For more information on required jumper setting for the 1.3GB disk drive, see "Required Jumper Setting for the 1.3GB Drive" later in this chapter.

Figure 5-5 Select Switch Connector on the Disk Drive Controller Board

    3. Turn the new disk drive upside down gently.

Position the drive so that the connectors are facing away from you.

    4. Place the disk drive bracket on the bottom side of the disk drive.

Position the bracket so that the side with the two captive screws is on the right side of the drive. See Figure 5-6.

    5. Align the four screw holes on the bottom of the disk drive with the four screw holes on the disk drive bracket.

    See Figure 5-6.

Figure 5-6 Disk Drive Bracket Assembly

    6. Remove the four screws from the container. Secure the bracket to the disk drive using these screws.
    7. Turn the disk drive on one of its sides.
    8. Place the handle on the side of the drive and align it so the tab of the handle is in the slot provided in the bracket.

    See Figure 5-7.

    Figure 5-7 Replacing the Handle

    9. Secure the handle to the drive by installing the screw.
    10. Install another handle on the other side of the drive.

Turn the disk drive on the other side. Repeat steps 8 and 9 to install the second handle.

The replacement disk drive assembly is ready to be replaced in the DSM.

Required Jumper Setting for the 1.3GB Drive

Jumper setting for 1.3GB drive are located at one terminator and two different connectors. The Power Source terminator is located directly behind the SCSI cable plug. The jumpers in this terminator are arranged as follows:

Pin 4 - o o - Pin 3

Pin 2 - o o - Pin 1

The jumpers should be connected between pins 1 and 3 and between pins 2 and 4 to cause the drive to supply external termination power.

The remaining jumper setting are located at connector J4A and J4B. See tables 5-1 and 5-2 for detail information.

Table 5-1 Connector J4A (The jumper next to Select Switch Connector)

Jumper Label Required Setting Description ID2 No Jumper SCSI ID (ID comes from switch cable)
ID1 No Jumper SCSI ID (ID comes from switch cable)
ID0 No Jumper SCSI ID (ID comes from switch cable)
WRP No Jumper Write Protect (Jumper enables WRP)
SLV No Jumper Master/Slave (Jumper enables slave)

Table 5-2 Connector J4B (The jumper plug next to DC Power Plug)

Jumper Label Required Setting Description SD0 Jumper Spinup Delay Option (Jumper allows spinup delay
equal to SCSI ID times 10 seconds)
SC0 No Jumper Startup Command Option (No jumper allows spinup
according to SDO jumper)
SCP No Jumper SCSI Bus Parity Check (No jumper enables parity
checking)
SWP Jumper Sweep Cycle Enable (Jumper enables automatic sweep
cycle)

Replacing a Disk Drive Assembly

Attach the wrist strap to your wrist and to the metal casing of the power supply. Make sure that the power cord is connected to the power outlet and to the wall outlet.

Caution -

Do not disconnect the power cord from the power outlet of the system unit or from the wall outlet. This connection provides the ground path necessary to safely remove and install the hard disk drive.

Make sure that the power to the system unit is turned off by checking that the green light-emitting diode (LED) at the front of the chassis is not lit and that the fan is not running.

Follow these steps to replace a disk drive assembly into the DSM:

    1. Position the disk drive assembly so that the connectors are pointing to the rear of the Desktop Storage Module.

    See Figure 5-8.

    2. Lower the drive assembly into the Desktop Storage Module, positioning the drive as close to the power supply as possible. Make sure the power supply side of the drive assembly is slightly higher than the other side.
    3. Lower the drive assembly completely. Rock it back and forth to make sure the drive assembly sits properly.
    4. Tighten the two captive screws on the bracket.

You may have to shift the drive assembly back and forth until the holes are aligned with the captive screws. See Figure 5-8. Do not use a power screwdriver on a captive screw.

    5. Connect the power cable to the disk drive.

See Figure 5-8. Route the power cable through the clip and make a loop further away from the fan as shown. Because connectors are keyed, they can be connected only one way.

    6. Connect the SCSI cable to the disk drive.

See Figure 5-8. Make sure that the EMI ferrite on the SCSI cable is pushed as close as possible to the drive. Because connectors are keyed, they can be connected only one way.

    Figure 5-8 Disk Drive

    7. Connect the select switch cable to the disk drive.

Make sure to orient the connector with the arrow facing up as shown in Figure 5-8. This connector is not keyed.

    8. Refer to Chapter 10 to detach the wrist strap, replace the cover, connect the Desktop Storage Module, and power up the system.
