4 Preparing the System

This chapter explains steps you must perform before replacing a part. Topics covered in this chapter include the following:

Tools Needed

To remove and replace replaceable parts, you need the following tools and materials:

Powering Down the System

Follow these steps to power down your system:

    1. Make sure that you or the system administrator has performed the necessary backups for your system and has warned clients or other workstation users to log out.
    2. Become the superuser.

    3. Halt the system. Enter the following:

Note - It is no longer necessary to enter the sync command before halting the system, since this command is now part of the halt command.

    4. Turn off the power to the Desktop Storage Module by pressing the power switch to the off (O) position.

The power switch is located on the rear panel of the unit.

    5. Turn off the power to the system unit.

Find the power switch on your system unit and press the switch to the off (O) position.

    6. Turn off the power to the monitor.

Find the power switch on the monitor and press the switch to the off (O) position.

Disconnecting the Desktop Storage Module

Follow these steps to disconnect the Desktop Storage Module from your system:

    1. Verify that the power switch on your Desktop Storage Module is in the off (O) position.
    2. Locate the SCSI ports on the Desktop Storage Module.

The following figure shows the SCSI port locations.

    Figure 4-2 SCSI Port Locations

    3. Press in on the finger clips on the SCSI cable plug or SCSI terminator plug and pull the plug completely away from the SCSI port on the Desktop Storage Module.

Removing the Cover of the Desktop Storage Module

Caution -

Make sure that the power switch on your DSM is in the off (O) position and that the power cord remains plugged in to the DSM and to the power source.

Follow these steps to remove the cover of the Desktop Storage Module:

    1. Loosen the captive screw in the lock block.

    Put the lock block aside.

    2. Grasp the cover with your fingers over the latch buttons at the sides and press the latch buttons.

This action releases the latches at the sides of the cover. See the following figure.

    Figure 4-4 Latch Buttons

    3. Lift the rear of the cover up slightly and push it forward.

    4. Set the cover aside.
Warning -

Before powering up your DSM again, be sure to close the unit. See "Replacing the Cover of the Desktop Storage Module" in chapter 10.

Attaching a Wrist Strap

The wrist strap is a device that provides grounding between your body and the chassis of the system unit for static electricity. Electric current and voltage do not pass through the wrist strap. Attach the wrist strap to your wrist and to the metal casing of the power supply. Parts that require the use of a wrist strap are packed with one.

Caution - If you do not wear a wrist strap, boards, cards and modules can be damaged by harmful electrical charges.

Note - The power cord must remain connected in order to provide necessary ground path for the wrist strap.

To attach the wrist strap:

    1. Wrap the wrist strap with the conductive adhesive tape twice around your wrist.

Make sure the adhesive side is against your skin.

    2. Attach the end with the adhesive copper strip to the metal casing of the power supply in the system unit.
