2 Preparing to Install the SuperSPARC Module

2.1 Overview

Follow the instructions in this document to install a SuperSPARC module on your SPARCserver 600MP, SPARCcenter 2000, or SPARCserver 1000 system board, or on your SPARCstation 10 or SPARCserver 10 main logic board.

The system board or main logic board can have up to two SuperSPARC modules. A module must be installed in the following:

A module in the second slot ("slot 1" or "slot B" on the system board, "slot 1" or "upper slot" on the main logic board) is optional. The second slot is used only for dual module configuration systems.

Note - Dual module configurations using modules in the SMxx SPARC module family are not supported under SunOS 4.x (Solaris 1.x). Dual module (multiprocessor) configurations require Solaris 2.1 (or later) operating system.
SMxx represents a SPARC module from a series of modules that begins with SM20.

2.2 Before You Begin the Installation

Read all of the cautions and warnings in this manual before you begin and see the "Tools Required" section to make sure you have the tools listed. Then verify the operating system version that is installed, unpack the shipment, and power off the system.

2.2.1 Identifying the UNIX Version of Your System

Execute the appropriate command that identifies the operating system and its version number. See the operating system documentation or the SMCC Handbook to find this UNIX® command.

Note - See Table 2-1 for software requirements specific to your system. If you are not running Solaris version 1.1 Rev. A or later (or another compatible operating system), you must install the latest version before you can continue.
If you are installing more than one module in the system (multiprocessor), you must install Solaris 2.1 (or later) or another compatible operating system.

2.2.2 Unpacking the Shipment

In addition to this guide, the shipment should include:

Do not remove the SuperSPARC module from its protective bag until you have completed all other preparations. Save the shipping carton and packing materials in case you need to transport the module.

2.2.3 Tools Required

To remove or install the MBus or SuperSPARC module, you will need:

For a SPARCserver 600MP or SPARCcenter 2000 System Board

For a SPARCstation 10 or SPARCserver 10 Main Logic Board

For a SPARCserver 1000 System Board

2.2.4 Electrostatic Discharge Precautions

Caution -

Circuit board components are vulnerable to damage by electrostatic discharge (ESD). An electrostatic charge can build up on the human body and then discharge when you touch a board. Such discharge can be produced by walking across a carpet and touching a board, or by other similar causes. Before handling any board, make sure you dissipate your body's charge. Touch a conductive surface of the chassis or other element connected to common earth ground to discharge the static electricity present in your body. To minimize risk of ESD damage:
o Handle board by edges only
o Store board in antistatic bag provided

2.2.5 Shutting Down the System

Caution -

To avoid damaging internal circuits, do not disconnect or plug in any cable while power is applied to the system.

Before you turn off the system power, you must halt the operating system or loss of data can occur.

To shut down the system and give users a shutdown warning:

    1. Notify users that the system is going down.
    2. Back up the system files and data to tape, if necessary.
    3. Halt the system using the appropriate commands.
    4. Wait for the system-halted message and the boot monitor prompt.
    5. Turn off the system power in this order:

If you require more specific information about turning off the system power, refer to the hardware service manual for your system.

Caution -

Turn off the power at the main AC breaker before you insert or remove boards and disk drives. Do not disconnect the AC power cord from its receptacle. The system chassis power must be turned off and the AC power cord must remain plugged in to ensure a proper ground.

2.3 Attaching the Wrist Strap

The wrist strap provides grounding for static electricity between your body and the system unit chassis.

Caution -

Boards and modules can be damaged by harmful electrical charges if you do not wear a wrist strap.

    1. Wrap the adhesive side of the wrist strap firmly against your wrist twice.

Figure 2-1 Wrapping the Wrist Strap Around Your Wrist

    2. Peel the liner from the copper foil at the opposite end of the wrist strap.
    3. Attach the copper end of the wrist strap to the metal casing of the power supply in the system unit.

Note - For SPARCserver 600MP systems, use Sun ESD kit P/N 250-1088 (or equivalent). Instructions are printed on the antistatic mat.
