1 Before You Start

1.1 What Is in This Manual

This manual gives the installation and replacement procedures for the 5 Gbyte 4mm backup tape drive into the SPARCserver 1000TM system.

The procedures are illustrated in Figure 1-1 on page 1-4 and are explained in greater detail in the following chapter.

1.2 What Tools You Will Need

You will need the following equipment to install or replace a 5 Gbyte 4mm backup tape drive in your system:

1.3 Verifying the Temperature of the 5 Gbyte 4mm Backup Tape Drive

Exposure to a sudden temperature or humidity change could cause condensation within the drive which could damage it. At the installation site, allow the drive to remain in its packing container until its temperature matches that of the surrounding air. Use Table 1-1 as a guide for allowable times before unpacking the drive based on the temperature of the drive upon receipt.

Caution -

A tape drive is an electromechanical device that may be damaged by excessive physical shock. Store or transport the 5 Gbyte 4mm backup tape drive in the right-side up position only. Do not shake, bump, or drop the tape drive when moving it. Such physical shock or incorrect positioning can damage it.

1.4 Unpacking and Inspecting the Drive

Caution -

Circuit board components can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). An electrostatic charge can build up on the human body and then discharge when you touch a board or a magnetic storage device, such as a tape drive. This discharge can be produced by walking across a carpet and touching a board, or by any other similar action. Before handling any board or magnetic storage device, make sure you are wearing a conductive wrist strap or foot strap to discharge static electricity to ground.

To unpack and inspect the 5 Gbyte 4mm backup tape drive:

    1. Set up and use the ESD kit.
    2. Unpack the tape drive.
    3. Place the tape drive on the ESD mat or, if a mat is unavailable, on top of the bag the drive was shipped in.

Placing the drive on the mat or the bag will prevent static discharge from accumulating in the device.

    4. Check package contents against the packing slip to make sure all parts have been included.

If any parts are missing, contact your sales representative.

    5. Inspect the drive, tape cartridge, and cleaning kit for evidence of damage.

If damaged, keep all contents and packing materials for the carrier's agent to inspect.

    6. Save packing materials for future use.

If you are replacing the 5 Gbyte 4mm backup tape drive, you will use the packing materials to return the original drive.
