Completing the Upgrade





Closing the System Unit

Caution -

When removing or installing the cover, grasp the cover by the rear and front edges only.

    1. Remove the wrist strap from your wrist and then from the power supply.
    2. Grasp the cover by the front and rear edges.

    See Figure 5-1.

    3. Align the cover hinge tabs with the chassis tab slots on the bottom front of the system. Make sure the tabs are locked into the chassis slots.
    4. Lower the cover onto the chassis.

    5. Replace the lock block and tighten the Phillips-head screw that secures the lock block to the cover.

Caution -

Do not use a power driver to tighten the back panel screws. Do not overtighten the back panel screws.

    6. Tighten the Phillips-head screw on the corner of the back panel to secure the cover.

Turning On the Power

    1. Reattach all cords and cables connected to the system unit.
    2. Turn on the power in this order:

The operating system should load or the ok prompt should appear on the monitor.

Power-On Self -Test (POST)

Note - For a full description of the Power-On Self-Test (POST), see Chapter 3 in the SPARCstation 20 Service Manual.

The Power-On Self-Test (POST) diagnostics reside in the OpenBoot PROM located on the system board. The following section is an abbreviated description of how the diagnostics work on a system not connected to a display terminal, another Sun Workstation, or a printer on serial port A.

Status Lights (LEDs) and Indicators

The LED on the right side of the system unit front panel lights up when the system is operating normally. See Figure 5-5.

When POST fails at power up, the keyboard displays a specific LED pattern. See Figure 5-6 and Table 5-1.

Note - The Caps Lock key LED, located just above the left-hand Shift key, is not used as a power-on test failure indicator, but flashes on and off while POST is running.
