Configuring Directory Services

Setting up directory services is a complex undertaking. Before proceeding with the configuration of Directory Services, you should read the following chapters:

• "Introduction to Directory Concepts" in Sun Directory Services 3.1 Administration Guide explains the concepts and architecture of Directory Services.

• "Planning a Directory Service" in Sun Directory Services 3.1 Administration Guide explains the global decisions you need to make about directory services before you can start the configuration of the individual directory service components.

Once you fully understand the implications, and have made the decisions you need to make, you can proceed with "Configuring a Directory Server" in Sun Directory Services 3.1 Administration Guide which provides you with step-by-step instructions for the following:

• Configuring security

• Specifying the administrator name and password

• Specifying the encryption method

• Specifying the security mode

• Configuring the LDAP Parameters

• Configuring the Data Store

• Configuring default access

• Configuring logging

• Backing up and restoring the configuration

In addition to the above tasks, you may need to carry out the following related configuration tasks:

• Configuring the NIS server.

• Configuring the RADIUS service

• Viewing and modifying the schema

• Configuring replication

• Configuring the Web Gateway
