    Access the Documentation

You can access the online documentation from either a SolarisTM system or a Microsoft Windows-based PC. The documentation is provided in two software-based formats, HTML and PDF. See Documentation Formats for more information. You can access both formats from either platform by opening the doc_homepage.htm file in an appropriate browser. See Browser and Viewer Requirements for information about supported browsers and viewers.

When you view the doc_homepage.htm file in your browser, you will see an image of a file drawer with book titles on the tabs of the folders, similar to this screen:

This image depicts the Sun Fire V480 Documentation CD home page, with links to all documentation on the CD.

How to Access the Documentation From a Solaris Software-based System

    1. Insert the Documentation CD into a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive connected to your system.
    • If your system is running Volume Manager software, the CD automatically mounts to the /cdrom/V480_docs directory.

    • If your system is not running Volume Manager software, become superuser and mount the CD manually by typing the following commands:
    system# mkdir -p /cdrom/V480_docs
    system# mount -o ro -F hsfs /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s2/cdrom/V480_docs

The second command above applies to systems with SCSI drives. If your system has an IDE drive, the device is /dev/dsk/c0t2d0s2.

Note - Both PC and Solaris files are visible in the /cdrom/V480_docs directory. The autorun.exe, autorun.inf, and autorun.apm files are for the PC only.
    1. Exit superuser status, if applicable.
    1. Launch the Netscape application or the web browser for your system.
    1. Enter the path to the documentation home page in the Location toolbar.
    file:/cdrom/V480_docs/doc_homepage.htm

Note - A Netscape browser requires the full path name shown above.

The file drawer image is displayed with the abbreviated names of the books on each tab.

    1. Navigate through the home page by clicking on the tabs.

How to Copy the Online Documentation to a Local Server

To give users access to Sun Fire V480 online documentation from their client machines without using the CD, you can copy the documentation directory from this CD to a local server. The documentation file system requires approximately 250 Mbytes of file space on the server.

Note - You must maintain the directory structure used on the CD in your new local directory to ensure the integrity of the hyperlinks within the documentation.
    1. Create an online documentation directory on your local server.

Choose any directory name that is appropriate for your site.

    1. Copy the contents of the CD into the new directory on the server.
      system% cp -r /cdrom/V480_docs/* your_documentation_directory

    View the Online Multimedia Demonstrations

The HTML version of the Sun Fire V480 Server Parts Installation and Removal Guide includes multimedia animations, which demonstrate how to install and remove selected components. You can launch the animations by selecting links within the HTML version of the Sun Fire V480 Server Parts Installation and Removal Guide.

How to Access the Animations From a Microsoft Windows-based PC

On a PC platform, you can use any MPEG player to view the animations, just click on an animation link. Make sure your browser is properly configured to use an MPEG viewer.

How to Access the Animations From a Solaris Software-based System

ShowMe TVTM software is required to play the animations on a Solaris platform. In addition, make sure your browser is properly configured for MPEG animations.

ShowMe TV software is included with the Solaris 2.6, Solaris 7, and Solaris 8 operating environments, on the Solaris Operating Environment Supplement CD.

You can also download ShowMe TV software from the following web site:
