iPlanet Messaging Server Migration Guide

Chapter 5   Troubleshooting iPlanet Messaging Server Migrations

Backout Strategy

It is always advisable to have a backout strategy in case unforeseen problems with the new system arise and it becomes necessary to revert to the old system until the problems with the new system are resolved.

As long as directory entries have not been migrated to the new schema, it is possible to back out user migrations by simply reversing the steps:

  1. Put the user back in the hold state by changing mailUserStatus to hold.

  2. Backup and restore (or use MoveUser) to move the mailboxes back to the original system.

  3. Update mail host to be the old system.

  4. Take the user out of hold.

  5. Process the hold queue on the new system to route any held mail back to the user's mailbox on the old system.

Errors During Directory Migration

imsdirmig migrates individual directory entries in what is called an "idempotent" fashion; if imsdirmig is told to migrate an entry that has already been migrated, it simply leaves the entry alone. Thus, all you have to do is keep restarting imsdirmig (after dealing with any reported errors) until imsdirmig reports that no directory entries were processed.
