CHAPTER 4

Setting Up MAPI Service Providers on Windows Clients

The SIMS 3.5 MAPI (Messaging API) service providers offer connectivity between Windows clients and SIMS 3.5 services. Exchange, Inbox, and Outlook users receive transparent access to the SIMS mail service and enhanced features such as support for HTML and Rich Text Format. This chapter shows you how to install and configure MAPI service providers on a Windows client desktop using the SIMS 3.5 Client CD.

The MAPI services are third-party products bundled with the SIMS 3.5 kit. The providers are Control Data Systems for the IMAP and SMTP components and Boldon James, Ltd., for the LDAP component as well as for the DAO and ODBC components (DAO and ODBC are redistributed from Microsoft). For the rest of this chapter, MAPI service providers refers to these components, not to the third parties that provide them. This sometimes confusing usage is in keeping with the conventions set forth in previously published MAPI documentation.

Windows, in the following procedures, refers to both Microsoft Windows® 95 and Microsoft Windows® NT® clients.

Note - Before installing the MAPI services on SIMS 3.5 clients, make sure the SIMS 3.5 server package is installed on at least one server. See the SunTM Internet Mail Server 3.5 Advanced Server Installation Guide.
