Release Notes for iPlanet™ Application Server (iAS EPE)

These release notes contain important information available at the time of the release of iPlanet Application Server, Enterprise Pro Edition, Version 6.5 (iAS EPE). New features and enhancements, known problems, and other information are addressed here. Read this document before you begin using iAS EPE.

The following iAS EPE 6.5 products have been certified to run on iPlanet Application Server, Enterprise Edition, 6.5 SP1.

Refer to the Release Notes for each product for information specific to operation with iAS EE, 6.5 SP1. Each Release Note document should contain a revision history table similar to the one included in this document.

Installation Instructions

You may have previously installed versions of any one of the products bundled with this release of iAS EPE on your machine or network, which may or may not affect your installation strategy. The following scenarios can help you to install the products in the correct order. Be sure to follow installation instructions for your particular operating system and read the Release Notes.

Scenario 3: iAS Upgrade and iPM Install

 
1 UIF and Enterprise Connectors users who do not need to use Process Manager should follow the installation and upgrade instructions described in the UIF and Enterprise Connectors Release Notes and documentation at the following location: http://docs.sun.com/prod/s1.entconn65. Process Manager users who do not need to use Enterprise Connectors can skip the UIF installation instructions in the scenarios described in Table 2.

Currently, there is no upgrade path for previous versions of iAS and iPM. If you have installed versions of either iAS 6.0, SPx or iPM 6.0, SPx, you must uninstall these versions and follow "Scenario 2: Backup iAS and iPM Applications, Uninstall Previous Versions, and Reinstall." After installing all necessary software, you must redeploy any previously deployed iAS and iPM applications.

If you have installed iAS EE 6.5, you should follow "Scenario 3: iAS Upgrade and iPM Install."

Scenario 1: Clean Install

Note that it is important to install the bundled software components in the correct order, as follows:

To perform an Install of iAS EPE

  1. Install iPlanet Web Server Enterprise Edition 6.0 SP2.

  3. Install iPlanet Directory Server 5.1, iPlanet Application Server Enterprise Editon 6.5, and iPlanet Process Manager 6.5.
  4. The installation disk for iPM contains a unified install, which includes the installation of the Directory Server, the Application Server, and Process Manager. Make sure to read the release notes for each product before installing.

  5. Install Unified Integration Framework 6.5.

    The installation instructions for UIF are in the iPlanet Unified Integration Framework Developer's Guide. You must install the Unified Integration Framework on the same machine or network cluster as the Application Server.

  7. Install any required patches.
  8. The iPlanet Process Manager 6.5 Release Notes contain instructions for the installation of additional required patches for Process Manager. See the individual release notes for other bundled products to determine if any other patches are required.

Scenario 2: Backup iAS and iPM Applications, Uninstall Previous Versions, and Reinstall

Note that it is important to install the bundled software components in the correct order, as follows:

To perform an iAS and iPM Application Backup, Uninstall, and Reinstall

  1. Back up any existing iAS and iPM applications by saving them to a local directory.
  2. Do not delete application information for iPlanet Process Manager applications. The iPlanet Process Manager 6.5 Release Notes contain a section called "Migration of iPM 6.0 Application Data to iPM 6.5." The iPlanet Application Server Migration Guide contains instructions for migrating Application Server applications.

  3. Uninstall iAS and iPM, following the instructions contained in the Installation Guide for each product.
  4. Uninstall and migrate data for any other bundled product you want to upgrade or replace with this installation.
  5. This information is generally contained in the Installation Guide or Migration Guide for each product.

  6. Install iPlanet Web Server Enterprise Edition 6.0 SP2.

  8. Install iPlanet Directory Server 5.1, iPlanet Application Server Enterprise Editon 6.5, and iPlanet Process Manager 6.5.

Perform this upgrade and installation if you already have iPlanet Application Server, Enterprise Edition, 6.5 installed. You do not have to backup deployed iAS applications before performing an iAS upgrade. You should already be using iPlanet Web Server Enterprise Edition 6.0 SP2 and iPlanet Directory Server 5.1 if you are running iPlanet Application Server, Enterprise Edition, 6.5.

To perform an iAS Upgrade and iPM Installation

  1. Install any required patches.
  2. The iPlanet Process Manager 6.5 Release Notes contain instructions for the installation of additional required patches for Process Manager. See the individual release notes for other bundled products to determine if any other patches are required.

  3. Install iPlanet Process Manager 6.5 components.

  10. Install iPlanet Process Manager 6.5 using the iAS EPE 6.5 CD.
  11. Select only the iPlanet Process Manager 6.5 components during installation. For detailed installation instructions, see the iPlanet Process Manager Installation Guide.

  12. Install Unified Integration Framework 6.5.

You do not have to backup deployed iAS or iPM applications before performing an iAS upgrade. You should already be using iPlanet Web Server Enterprise Edition 6.0 SP2 and iPlanet Directory Server 5.1 if you are running iPlanet Application Server, Enterprise Edition, 6.5.

To perform an iAS Upgrade

iAS EPE Sample Application

The iAS EPE Sample Application consists of:

The iAS EPE Sample Application provides an example of how a Process Manager application can interact with an Enterprise Information System (EIS) using a custom activity. A Stubbed Connector is shipped with this sample application. The Stubbed Connector simulates a real connector and implements the protocol required by Unified Integration Framework (UIF). It returns hard-coded values for queries made from an iPM application custom activity. The file GetEmployeeDetails.java, discussed in the documentation that ships with the sample application, is placed in the following location when you unzip the VacationRequest application:
