Preface

The Sun Update Manager 1.0 Administration Guide explains the purpose and features of the Suntrademark Update Manager client software, henceforth referred to as Update Manager.

This book also describes how to install, register, and use the Update Manager software. Update Manager provides a consolidated set of robust patch and update tools for managing updates on the Solaristrademark 10 Operating System.

The Update Manager application is part of the Sun Update Connection, System Edition software product. The Sun Update Connection services and proxy are also part of this software product and are discussed in this book.



Note - The terms patch and update are used interchangeably in the Sun Update Manager application and in this book.




How This Book Is Organized

This guide contains five chapters and a glossary.

Chapter 1 describes how to get started using Update Manager in your update management environment. This chapter also provides an overview of Solaris updates, describes the main features in this release, and describes concepts to become familiar with before applying updates.

Chapter 2 describes how to install and uninstall the Sun Update Manager client software. It also explains how to install the Sun Update Connection Proxy software.

Chapter 3 describes how to register your system to take advantage of the functionality of the Sun Update Manager application.

Chapter 4 describes how to use the Sun Update Manager application to manage updates.

Chapter 5 describes how to configure and use a Sun Update Connection Proxy, also referred to as a local patch server, on your intranet.

Glossary is a list of terms that are used in this book and their definitions.
