The NEM provides the magnetics and RJ-45 connectors for the ten 10/100/1000 BASE-T Ethernet interfaces that come from Sun Blade 6000 server modules through the midplane.
Each server module has:
One 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet pass through port.
Two shared virtual ports. All ten blades are internally connected through each of the virtual ports.
The speed of the shared virtual ports can be configured as follows:
Both 10Gb ports can connect externally to a switch and internally to all blades.
One 40Gb port can be used for both external and internal connections, and the 10Gb port can be used for internal-connection only.
The NEM provides a 40GbE connection for each server module. Each server module appears to have its own 40GbE NIC through the virtualized NEM ASIC. The 40GbE NIC uses four physical SFP+ ports as one logical 40GbE port.
See 10GbE NIC Virtualization for further information on the NEM 10GbE virtualization.
The following illustration shows a schematic of the virtualized NEM Ethernet connections.
