Add charts to a view

Before you begin

Open an existing view, or create a new one. For more information, see:

For related concepts regarding charts, see The Parts of a Chart.

Note: Charts can be added only to custom views. You cannot add them to built-in views.

To add a chart to a view:

  1. Select the view menu and choose New Chart.

An empty chart is added to the view. If an existing chart in the view is already selected, the new chart is added immediately below it.

Note: You can also create a chart in the view by dragging a metric from the Metric Browser to an empty area in the view, or by copying or moving a chart from a different view. For more information, see Add metrics to a chart and Copy or move charts.

  2. Set chart properties. The default chart type is determined by the dashboard preferences, but you can change an individual chart to a different type as follows:
    1. Select the chart menu.
    2. Select Chart Type, and choose the type of chart you want to use. For details about the available charts, see Choose the chart type.

You can change the default chart type used when creating a new chart by using the Dashboard Preferences dialog box. For information, see Set dashboard preferences.

Result

The chart is added to the view. To add metric to the chart, see Add metrics to a chart. The charts you add to a view are automatically persisted and in effect only for your user account and only in the current domain. They are available to you the next time you launch the Monitoring Dashboard. Note, however, that polled metric values that are displayed in built-in and custom views are not persisted after you close the Monitoring Dashboard window. For more information, see Using the Monitoring Dashboard.
