8 Oracle VM Guest

This chapter describes the Oracle VM Guest metrics. This release of Enterprise Manager employs a new method for collecting performance metrics. To reduce load and increase scalability, metrics for the Oracle VM Server and Oracle VM Guest targets in an Oracle VM Server Pool are collected as part of the Oracle VM Server Pool target. However, all data are delivered to the correct targets.

8.1 Oracle VM Guest DiskActivity

This metric is used to bulk collect all disk-related metrics for all the Oracle VM Guest targets in the Oracle VM Server Pool. This metric is not uploaded, but is only used for alerts. Thresholds should be defined against this metric and the threshold values are applicable to all the Oracle VM Guest targets in the server pool.

Collection schedule is governed by the schedule of the Oracle VM Guest DiskActivity Scheduled metric. Any alerts generated are generated against the relevant Oracle VM Guest target.

8.1.1 Disk

This metric displays the name of the disk.

8.1.2 Read Throughput (KB/S)

This metric displays the read throughput of the disk in kb/s. If unusually high values are observed, then check for crashing applications. If high values are expected, then consider using high speed storage for better performance.

8.1.3 Total Throughput (KB/S)

This metric displays the total throughput of the disk in kb/s. If unusually high values are observed, then check for crashing applications. If high values are expected, then consider using high speed storage for better performance.

8.1.4 Write Throughput (KB/S)

This metric displays the write throughput of the disk in kb/s. If unusually high values are observed, then check for crashing applications. If high values are expected, then consider using high speed storage for better performance.

8.2 Oracle VM Guest DiskActivity Scheduled

This metric is used to bulk collect all disk related metrics for all the Oracle VM Guest targets in the Oracle VM Server Pool. Any collection schedule changes should be made to this metric, and such changes affect the collection of this metric for all Oracle VM Guest targets in the pool. This metric is not uploaded, but collects data for the corresponding alert-only and upload-only metrics.

Collection schedule is governed by the schedule of the Oracle VM Guest DiskActivity Scheduled metric. Any alerts generated are generated against the relevant Oracle VM Guest target.

8.2.1 Disk

This metric displays the name of the disk.

8.2.2 Read Throughput

8.3 Oracle VM Guest DiskActivity Summary

This metric is used to ”bulk” collect all disk-related metrics for all the Oracle VM Guest targets in the Oracle VM Server Pool. This is a summary metric which computes values across all the guests in the pool and uploads them. The collection schedule is governed by the schedule of the Oracle VM Guest DiskActivity Scheduled metric.

8.3.1 Highest Read Throughput (kb/s)

This metric displays the maximum read throughput in kb/sec observed across the disks in the Oracle VM Guest target. You can use it to decide on thresholds of the Oracle VM Guest DiskActivity metric.

8.3.2 Highest Total Throughput (kb/s)

This metric displays the maximum total throughput in kb/sec observed across the disks in the Oracle VM Guest target. You can use it to decide on thresholds of the Oracle VM Guest DiskActivity metric.

8.3.3 Highest Write Throughput (kb/s)

This metric displays the maximum write throughput in kb/sec observed across the disks in the Oracle VM Guest target. You can use it to decide on thresholds of the Oracle VM Guest DiskActivity metric.

8.3.4 Total Throughput (kb/sec)

This metric displays the total throughput in kb/sec observed across all the disks in the Oracle VM Guest target. You can use it to render graphs on the target home page.

8.4 Oracle VM Guest Filesystems

This metric is used to ”bulk” collect all file system related metrics for all the Oracle VM Guest targets in the Oracle VM Server Pool. This metric is not uploaded, but is only used for alerts. Thresholds should be defined against this metric, and the threshold values are applicable to all the Oracle VM Guest targets in the server pool.

The Collection schedule is governed by the schedule of the Oracle VM Guest Filesystems Scheduled metric. Any alerts generated are generated against the relevant Oracle VM Guest target.

8.4.1 Disk

This metric displays the name of the disk.

8.4.2 Free Space (MB)

This metric displays the free space on the disk in MB. You can configure this metric so that if free space falls below a certain value, then an alert is raised. If an alert is raised, consider freeing up space on the disk or adding additional storage.

8.4.3 Used Space (%)

This metric displays the used space on the disk (%). You can configure this metric so that if the file space utilization goes beyond a certain value, then an alert is raised. If an alert is raised, consider freeing up space on the disk or adding extra storage.

8.5 Oracle VM Guest Filesystems Scheduled

This metric is used to ”bulk” collect all file system-related metrics for all the Oracle VM Guest targets in the Oracle VM Server Pool. Any collection schedule changes should be made to this metric, and such changes affect the collection of this metric for all Oracle VM Guest targets in the pool. This metric is not uploaded, but collects data for the corresponding alert-only and upload-only metrics.

8.5.1 Disk

This metric displays the name of the disk.

8.5.2 Free MB

This metric displays the free space on the disk in MB.

8.5.3 Used

This metric displays the used space on the disk (%)

8.6 Oracle VM Guest Filesystems Summary

This metric is used to ”bulk” collect all file system-related metrics for all the Oracle VM Guest targets in the Oracle VM Server Pool. This is a summary metric which computes values across all the guests in the pool and uploads them. The collection schedule is governed by the schedule of the Oracle VM Guest Filesystems Scheduled metric.

8.6.1 Total Used

This metric displays the total space used on all disks for the Oracle VM Guest target. You can use this metric to render graphs on the target homepage.

8.7 Oracle VM Guest Load

This metric is used to ”bulk” collect all load-related metrics for all the Oracle VM Guest targets in the Oracle VM Server Pool. Any collection schedule changes should be made to this metric, and such changes affect the collection of this metric for all Oracle VM Guest targets in the pool.

This metric is uploaded and thresholds can be defined against the metric columns. Any alerts generated are generated against the relevant Oracle VM Guest target.

Note:

The collection schedule for Oracle VM Guest Load metrics must be greater than the Oracle VM Manager statistics collection interval.

Oracle recommends setting the Oracle VM Guest Load collection schedule to five times greater than the Oracle VM Manager statistics collection interval.

For example, if Oracle VM Manager statistics collection interval is defined at 100 seconds, then set the Oracle VM Guest Load collection schedule to 500 seconds at a minimum.

8.7.1 Relative CPU Utilization (%)

This metric displays the physical cpu utilization of the Oracle VM Guest running on the Oracle VM Server target. Thresholds can be defined on this metric, the value depends on the number of Oracle VM Guests running on Oracle VM Server. If alerts are raised regularly, consider reducing the load on the Oracle VM Server target and allocating more processing power to the Oracle VM Guest target.

8.7.2 Upsince

This metric displays the length of time that the Oracle VM Guest has been running.

8.8 Oracle VM Guest Network Activity

This metric is used to ”bulk” collect all network activity-related metrics for all the Oracle VM Guest targets in the Oracle VM Server Pool. This metric is not uploaded, but is only used for alerts. Thresholds should be defined against this metric, and the threshold values are applicable to all the Oracle VM Guest targets in the server pool.

Collection schedule is governed by the schedule of the Oracle VM Guest Network Activity Scheduled metric. Any alerts generated are generated against the relevant Oracle VM Guest target.

8.8.1 Interface

This metric displays the name of the interface.

8.8.2 Read Throughput (KB/S)

This metric displays the read throughput on the interface in kb/s. If high values are expected, then consider using a high speed network or adding additional network interfaces via bonding for better performance.

8.8.3 Total Throughput (KB/S)

This metric displays the total throughput on the interface in kb/s. If high values are expected, then consider using a high speed network or adding additional network interfaces via bonding for better performance.

8.8.4 Write Throughput (KB/S)

This metric displays the write throughput on the interface in kb/s. If high values are expected, then consider using a high speed network or adding additional network interfaces via bonding for better performance.

8.9 Oracle VM Guest Network Activity Scheduled

This metric is used to ”bulk” collect all network activity related metrics for all the Oracle VM Guest targets in the Oracle VM Server Pool. Any collection schedule changes should be made to this metric, and such changes affect the collection of this metric for all Oracle VM Guest targets in the pool. This metric is not uploaded, but collects data for the corresponding alert-only and upload-only metrics.

8.9.1 Interface

This metric displays the name of the interface.

This metric is used to ”bulk” collect all network activity-related metrics for all the Oracle VM Guest targets in the Oracle VM Server Pool. This is a summary metric which computes values across all the guests in the pool and uploads them. The collection schedule is governed by the schedule of the Oracle VM Guest Network Activity Scheduled metric.

8.10.1 Highest Read Throughput (kb/s)

This metric displays the maximum read throughput observed across the interfaces in the Oracle VM Guest target. You can use it to decide on thresholds of the Oracle VM Guest Network Activity metric.

8.10.2 Highest Total Throughput (kb/s)

This metric displays the maximum total throughput observed across the interfaces in the Oracle VM Guest target. You can use this metric to decide on thresholds of the Oracle VM Guest Network Activity metric.

8.10.3 Highest Write Throughput (kb/s)

This metric displays the maximum write throughput observed across the interfaces in the Oracle VM Guest target. You can use this metric to decide on thresholds of the Oracle VM Guest Network Activity metric.

8.10.4 Total Throughput (kb/s)

This metric displays the total throughput observed across all the interfaces in the Oracle VM Guest target. You can use this metric to render graphs on the target home page.

This metric category provides information about the state of the Oracle VM Guest.

This metric displays the state of the Oracle VM Guest, such as running, stopped, stopping, or starting.
