File Systems in Oracle Solaris

Oracle Solaris 11 supports the following file systems:

  • Disk-based file systems: HSFS, PCFS, UDFS, UFS, and ZFS

  • Network-based file systems: NFS and SMB

  • Virtual file systems: CTFS, FIFOFS, MNTFS, NAMEFS, OBJFS, SHAREFS, SPECFS, and SWAPFS

  • Temporary file system (TMPFS)

  • Loopback file system (LOFS)

UFS is a legacy file system, but it is not supported as a bootable root file system. ZFS is the default root file system. For more information about ZFS file systems in Oracle Solaris, see Data Management on the Oracle Solaris product site and see Managing ZFS File Systems in Oracle Solaris 11.4.
