Oracle Solaris 11.4 uses GNOME 3 Classic Mode to provide the desktop environment. The GNOME 3 version provides a number benefits over its predecessor GNOME 2 that is used in previous update versions of Oracle Solaris 11. GNOME 3 is lightweight, user-friendly, stable, responsive to security issues, and is actively used in the community.
The GNOME 3 desktop on Oracle Solaris supports basic desktop functionality and includes the Firefox web browser, Thunderbird mail client, Pidgin instant messenger, and the Evince document viewer.
