Understanding PeopleSoft Online Help Accessibility

The PeopleSoft Online Help is coded to standards for accessibility. For example, you can access all features of the online help by using only the keyboard, and the site is coded to standards to work with assistive technology, such as a screen reader.

Review Navigating the PeopleSoft Online Help for information about how the site is structured and how to navigate between pages.

In addition, the following recommendations improve the accessibility of specific features in the PeopleSoft Online Help.

Page Tabs

Some navigation pages contain multiple page tabs that you use to change the content that appears on the page. The tabs are set up as a tab list. You can use the following commands to navigate through the tabs using the keyboard:

Key

Action

Tab and Shift+Tab

When the cursor is before or after the tab list, move to the active tab in the tab list. The first tab is active by default when you access a page, but if you select a different tab, that tab remains active as long as you stay on the page.

Right Arrow and Left Arrow

Move between tabs in the tab list. If the cursor isn’t currently in the tab list, press Tab or Shift+Tab until you reach the active tab in the tab list. Then use the arrow keys to move between tabs.

If you press the Right Arrow at the end of the tab list, focus moves to the first tab in the list, and vice versa.

Enter

Displays the content of the tab that is currently in focus. When you move between the tabs, tab content does not actually change until you press Enter.

Home

When the focus is in the tab list, this moves to the first tab.

End

When the focus is in the tab list, this moves to the last tab.

Expandable and Collapsible Tree Views

Navigation pages include expandable and collapsible tree views that contain links to the help content. To ensure that you can access all content within these tree views, select the Expand All Sections check box in the Display Options portlet on any navigation page. See Using Portlets for more information about the Display Options portlet.

In addition, you can use the following commands to navigate through the tree views using the keyboard:

Key

Action

Up Arrow and Down Arrow

Move between all visible nodes. If a node is collapsed, this moves to the next visible mode (not to the contents of the collapsed node).

Left Arrow

If the node is expanded, this collapses the node. If the node is collapsed, this moves to the parent node (if one exists).

Right Arrow

If the node is collapsed, this expands the node. If the node is expanded, this moves to the first child node, after which point you switch to the Down Arrow to move through the remaining child nodes.

Enter

If the node contains a link to a subject navigation page or a help page, this opens that page.

Any letter key

Moves to the first visible node with a title beginning with that letter.

Home

Moves to the top node in the tree view.

End

Moves to the last visible node in the tree view.

Expandable and Collapsible Portlets

Each portlet on the left side of the page has a maximize/minimize button in the title bar. The button label toggles between “Maximize” and “Minimize” to indicate the state of the portlet.

Press the Tab key to access the portlet buttons using the keyboard, and press the Enter key to press the button.

Business Process Maps (BPMs)

For PeopleSoft Applications product lines that provide BPM diagrams in the online help, you can click the Switch to Text-Only BPMslink to access text-only versions of the BPM diagrams.

See Using Text-Only BPM Pages.
