This preface contains:
The following are changes in Oracle Big Data Appliance release 2 (2.3):
Oracle Big Data Appliance X4-2
Oracle Big Data Appliance racks are now shipped with Sun Server X4-2L servers.
Oracle Big Data Appliance Configuration Generation Utility
Oracle Big Data Appliance Configuration Generation Utility replaces the configuration worksheets and the spreadsheet. Customers can now specify the configuration details and generate the configuration files themselves.
See Chapter 4.
Automated Configuration of a Secure Cluster
This release supports fully automated configuration of a secure cluster with Kerberos authentication.
See "Kerberos" and Oracle Big Data Appliance Software User's Guide.
Automated Configuration of Auditing
This release supports fully automated configuration of auditing by exposing the Hadoop audit trails in Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall.
See "Audit Vault" and Oracle Big Data Appliance Software User's Guide.
Software Upgrades
New versions of the software are installed with this release, including Cloudera's Distribution including Apache Hadoop (CDH) 4.4, Cloudera Manager 4.7, and Java 7.
See "Upgrading the Software on Oracle Big Data Appliance" and Oracle Big Data Appliance Software User's Guide.
Perfect Balance Can Be Used Without Modifications to the Source Code
By using the following configuration properties, you can call Perfect Balance automatically:
oracle.hadoop.balancer.autoAnalyze
oracle.hadoop.balancer.autoBalance
oracle.hadoop.balancer.runMode
The following features are deprecated in this release, and may be desupported in a future release.
Perfect Balance Configuration Properties
The following configuration properties are deprecated in this release:
oracle.hadoop.balancer.driver.balance
oracle.hadoop.balancer.submitJob
oracle.hadoop.balancer.tools.useCountingReducer
The following are changes in Oracle Big Data Appliance release 2 (2.2.1):
One-Off Patch Installation Support
The Mammoth now supports one-off patching.
Oracle Enterprise Manager System Monitoring Plug-in
The Mammoth provides additional support for deploying Enterprise Manager agents on Oracle Big Data Appliance.
See "Mammoth Installation Steps."
The Enterprise Manager command-line utility (emcli
) is installed on Oracle Big Data Appliance.
Upgraded Software Versions
Java HotSpot Virtual Machine 6 Update 51 and Cloudera Manager Enterprise 4.6.3 are installed with this release.
The following are changes in Oracle Big Data Appliance release 2 (2.2).
Separate Clusters for Oracle NoSQL Database
HDFS and Oracle NoSQL Database do not share a cluster. Clusters are dedicated to either CDH or Oracle NoSQL Database. To upgrade a 2.1 or earlier cluster, you must first remove Oracle NoSQL Database.
Multiple Clusters in One Rack
You can configure a rack with multiple clusters in several different configurations.
Job Tracker High Availability
Clusters support two Job Trackers to ensure that one is always up and running. To support this change, some software services now run on different nodes in the cluster.
See Oracle Big Data Appliance Software User's Guide.
Perfect Balance
Perfect Balance is a new tool for improving the performance of some MapReduce jobs.
See Oracle Big Data Appliance Software User's Guide.
The location of some services has changed and vary slightly between starter racks, full racks, and multiple-rack clusters.
JobTrackers and failover controllers run on node03 and node04.
ZooKeeper is configured with servers running on node01, node02, and node03.
Oozie is configured with a server running on node04.

Starter Rack and In-Rack Upgrade Kit
Oracle Big Data Appliance is now available as a starter rack with six servers instead of the full rack of 18 servers. An upgrade kit expands the starter rack to 12 servers, and a second upgrade kit expands it to 18 servers.
See "Oracle Big Data Appliance Rack Components" and "Oracle Big Data Appliance Rack Layout."
Multiple Clusters in a Rack
You can now configure a full Oracle Big Data Appliance rack with multiple Hadoop clusters. The smallest cluster size is six servers. Larger clusters must have multiples of three servers.
This support affects the Oracle Big Data Appliance Configuration Worksheets, the network configuration, and the Mammoth software installation.
See Chapter 7.
Cloudera Software Upgrade
Mammoth 2.2.0 installs Cloudera's Distribution including Apache Hadoop (CDH) 4.3.0 and Cloudera Manager 4.6.0. Cloudera Manager manages Hive, so you must now use Cloudera Manager to start, stop, and configure Hive.
You can upgrade from Oracle Big Data Appliance 2.1, 2.0, or 1.1 software.
Oracle NoSQL Database Enterprise Edition
If you have a license, you can have Mammoth install Oracle NoSQL Database Enterprise Edition instead of the Community Edition.
See "Cluster Page."
The dcli
utility uses the Ethernet IP addresses that are stored in the BdaDeploy.json and BdaShip.json files. The rack-hosts-infiniband file is obsolete.
See Chapter 13.

The following are changes in Oracle Big Data Appliance Owner's Guide for Oracle Big Data Appliance release 2 (2.0).
Oracle Big Data Appliance X3-2
Oracle Big Data Appliance racks are now shipped with a different hardware configuration named Oracle Big Data Appliance X3-2. The Sun Server X3-2L-based racks supersede the Sun Fire X4270 M2-based racks. All versions of the Oracle Big Data Appliance software run on both hardware configurations.
Cloudera's Distribution including Apache Hadoop Version 4 (CDH4)
CDH4 replaces CDH3. CDH4 provides automatic failover of the NameNode and uses different services than CDH3.
See "Port Assignments for Oracle Big Data Appliance Software" for the ports used by CDH4.
See Oracle Big Data Appliance Software User's Guide for more information about using CDH4.
