After a successful but broadly compliance based 9.2 upgrade Allen & Overy (A&O) believed that 9.2 functionality could bring significant benefits to the business. To test/prove this hypothesis A&O identified the HR Shared Services centre in Belfast as an area of focus and (with Version1’s input) looked at a number of processes that could potentially benefit from the application of PS 9.2 functionality. These were subject to optioneering and business case analysis and from this a set of sprint projects emerged that implemented the functionality listed below:

The implementation of a Workcentre for HR shared services, smart HR templates, activity guides, guided processes for conditional processes and data driven email notifications

  • The HR Admin Workcentre provides a single point of entry for all guided processes, reports, links to other systems
  • Smart HR integration with the ATS (IBM Kenexa) eliminates double keying
  • New hire and Employee data change Activity Guides simplifies the processes
  • Responses to questions dynamically adjust the steps in the activity guide
  • Guide is tuned to show only the steps that are needed by a particular instance of the process
  • Online guidance replaces 40-page manual and the built-in peer-checking step improves quality

PeopleSoft Succession Planning & Talent summaries:

  • Extension of the Succession Planning module
  • Use of talent pools
  • Integration with ELM for training data
  • Data feeds to warehouse for contextual reporting

Why it's great

Many customers get to 9.2 to be supported and then stop but A&O have done 2 really interesting things:

  • They have identified areas in the business where they believed there might be benefits from 9.2 and have been successful in implementing and realising real benefits.
  • Perhaps more significantly, by picking their 9.2 projects carefully, implementing successfully and messaging well they have managed to get the business to begin to really engage with the application and now have a mandate to look at further projects and broader use of 9.2 functionality

So we would view them as an innovator from the perspective of pure use of the technology but also from the perspective of business engagement which is a significant achievement.
