Summary

Lakeland College, in conjunction with their partner NTT DATA, used the Page and Field Configurator feature to limit access to sensitive information on a page shared by end users and administrators eliminating a previous customization.

Customer comments

Lakeland College used the Page and Field Configurator (PFC) feature to replace a custom page used to assist students with password resets.

Use case: Resetting student passwords

Lakeland College support staff are tasked with resetting student account passwords in PeopleSoft Campus Solutions. Students initiate a request with the Lakeland support team to reset their password if they are unable to do it themselves using the self-service option.

To accomplish this, support staff update password information on the user profile page while maintaining read-only access to all other information on the page.

Custom solution

Initially, this requirement was achieved with PeopleCode customization on the user profile page by:

  • Adding a new user-general page.
  • Creating new roles/permission lists to give access to this custom page to the support team members.
  • Disabling all fields on the new page except those needed by the support team.
  • Adding the cloned page to the User Profile component.
Eliminated customizations using Page and Field Configurator

We used the Page and Field Configurator to conditionally disable the fields on the delivered page based on the current user’s role allowing support staff to access only the password reset fields. Additional criteria in Page and Field Configurator allows us to apply this for student accounts while maintaining full access to other types of accounts.

Business requirement details

Lakeland does not use SSO login for student accounts. SSO is enabled only for staff logins. Hence, the ability to change or reset passwords in the User Profile component of PeopleSoft Campus Solutions needed to be disabled for staff user accounts as password changes for LDAP accounts are handled externally for SSO users.

However, the support team maintaining student accounts in PeopleSoft Campus Solutions needed access to be able to reset or change passwords for students in PeopleSoft Campus Solutions.

Apart from password changes and enabling or disabling account locks, the student support team were not allowed to change anything else on student’s user profile such as changes to roles or permissions. On the other hand, the support team should be able to change roles and permissions assigned to staff user profiles but not allowed to change or reset passwords for them.

This type of selective access—different for staff and student user profiles—was controlled in PFC with conditions based on specific roles to give the right access to support team for maintaining student and other staff user profiles.

Benefits

We were able to restore the user profile component as delivered while providing specific functionality required for student password maintenance.

Page and Field Configurator provided us options to control the information viewed by users allowing both end users and support staff to use the same page for updating information. We were able to remove a previously built customization.
