The way attachment thumbnails and streaming files are generated, stored and displayed in Agile PLM is controlled by a combination of settings in the Agile Administrator nodes Preferences, Location, Viewer and Files, and Users.
When the system preference Thumbnail and Streaming File Pre-Generation is enabled, then AutoVue creates streaming files and thumbnails and stores them. The combination of thumbnail file and streaming file settings determine the specific behavior in Agile PLM. These setting combinations and the Agile behavior results are discussed in "Possible Combinations of Thumbnail Settings."
For more information about how thumbnails are displayed to the end user in Web Client, see Getting Started with Agile PLM, chapter "Working with Thumbnails."
The following list summarizes the Agile Administrator settings that affect the display of thumbnail files, and the generation and storage of both thumbnail files and streaming files.
Systemwide Preferences
The following systemwide preferences are overall system settings for thumbnails.
Thumbnail Display system preference
Server Settings > Preferences
This systemwide preference determines whether thumbnails will be displayed (Enabled) or not displayed (Disabled). See "Default Systemwide Preferences."
Thumbnail and Streaming File Pre-Generation system preference
Determines whether thumbnails and streaming files are pre-generated through AutoVue by specific file managers, as determined by the Enable Pre-Generation by Vue Server option setting for each file manager. See also "Advanced File Manager Fields."
Viewer and Files
Settings in the Viewer and Files node control the storage of thumbnail files and streaming files by file type. See Chapter 20, "Viewer and Files."
File Association tab, Auto Generate Thumbnails column
To store pre-generated thumbnails by file type, select the check boxes for the file types you want in the Auto Generate Thumbnails column. See "File Association tab."
File Association tab, Viewer column
To store pre-generated streaming files by file type, select the check boxes for the files you want in the Viewer column. See "File Association tab."
General Information tab, Directly Use These Thumbnail Image Types field
List of file types (by file extension) that are directly converted to thumbnails without using the Vue server. See "Directly Use These Thumbnail Image Types."
File Manager
Use the Server Settings > Locations > File Manager tab to configure each file server. See "File Management in Agile PLM," and "Configuring a File Manager."
Thumbnail and Streaming Files Generation section of Advanced file manager settings
Enable Pre-Generation by Vue Server check box enables the pre-generation of thumbnails and streaming files for that specific file manager. See "Advanced File Manager Fields."
User Profile preferences
When thumbnail display is enabled at the system level, then thumbnail display can also be controlled for each user.
User object > Preferences tab – Display Preferences section
Thumbnails user preference
On or Off; default is Off
Determines whether thumbnails are displayed for the specific user. Thumbnail display can be set On or Off for each user with this user profile preference. See "User Properties Defined."
Table Display Mode user preference
Standard or With Thumbnails
When the Thumbnails user preference is On, then this user preference determines the default thumbnail view for tables.
For more information about how thumbnails are displayed to the end user in Web Client, see Getting Started with Agile PLM, chapter "Working with Thumbnails."
Search Display Mode user preference
Only Thumbnails, Standard, or Standard with Thumbnails
When the Thumbnails user preference is On, then this user preference determines the default thumbnail view for search results tables.
For more information about how thumbnails are displayed to the end user in Web Client, see Getting Started with Agile PLM, chapter "Working with Thumbnails."
The following examples illustrate the possible combinations of thumbnail-related settings and the results of each combination.
