System Expansion

To accommodate increased storage demands and to expand the storage pool available to the Oracle FS System, you can add Drive Enclosures to the system. You can combine additional DE2-24P Drive Enclosures and DE2-24C Drive Enclosures in the same system.

Before adding a Drive Enclosure, make sure that the system has the latest software version installed:

In Oracle FS System Manager (GUI), log in with a support administrator account and select Support > Software and Firmware.
In Oracle FS CLI, run the software_update ‑list ‑installed command.

Additionally, determine whether sufficient space exists in the rack for the new Drive Enclosures. The PDUs installed in the rack must have enough free circuits. If the PDUs cannot accommodate more Drive Enclosures or if the rack lacks space for more Drive Enclosures, then you must set up additional racks.

Note: Adding Drive Enclosures can be disruptive to the system in the following circumstances:

The existing PDU arrangements are insufficient to fulfill power requirements. The system must be powered off to add PDUs to the existing PDU arrangement.

Note: If the system uses Oracle-supplied racks with PDUs designed for the system, you rarely need additional PDUs to fulfill power requirements. It might be necessary to enable the second half of an Oracle PDU in order to utilize additional power receptacles. Enabling the second half of an Oracle PDU is not disruptive to the system.
The current layout of the hardware in the racks requires changes to accommodate the length limits for cables that are used for Controller-to-Drive Enclosure connections and Drive Enclosure-to-Drive Enclosure connections.

Based on the configuration of Drive Enclosure strings, adding Drive Enclosures to the system requires one of the following scenarios:

Distribute the new Drive Enclosures across the existing Drive Enclosure strings that contain less than five Drive Enclosures. Adding to an existing Drive Enclosure string is non-disruptive to the system.

When adding Drive Enclosures to an existing Drive Enclosure string, attach the new Drive Enclosure to the last Drive Enclosure on the string.
Create a new Drive Enclosure string. You can add up to five Drive Enclosures to a new string. A new Drive Enclosure string requires an available SAS HBA port.
