Each article in the terminal system is stored with a
unique number. If an article is to be posted using a keyboard, the article
number is entered and the article key is pressed. If an automatic reading
device is used for posting the article, the bar code (EAN) of the article is
scanned into the system instead of entering the number.
In the maintenance program of Branches, special parameters are defined for
certain EAN numbers. These EAN parameters apply then to all of the articles of
the branch.
Depending on the EAN parameters stored in the system, the EAN
numbers are interpreted accordingly. Therefore, specific areas of an EAN number
can be interpreted as an article number, a article group number, weight,
quantity or price.
By means of the first part of an entered or scanned
EAN number, the article is assigned accordingly to a parameter record.
When an EAN number is read into the system, the first
part of the number identifying the type of the EAN number and the number of
digits of the EAN number will be checked by the system. If the number is
checked to be valid, the parameters stored in the number will be evaluated
accordingly. These parameters determine the way the article is to be posted, to
an individual article, to an article group, with price, quantity, or weight, or
with additional information entered by the operator at the time of posting,
etc.
Example:
In Germany,
magazines are coded with a 13-digit EAN number beginning with a 3-digit press
code "349".
The EAN number can be broken down into fields. Field 1
contains the 3-digit code number, field 2 contains the article price. The
register function corresponds to a normal registration of an open article
(entering of the article number with the article key and price)
In the EAN parameter record, it can be additionally
defined whether all articles are to be posted to a specific article number or
to a specific article group number.
This way, the appropriate posting parameters can be
defined for the different types of EAN/UCP numbers.
This applies for the following types of EAN/UCP
numbers:
