Build a Portfolio Resource Plan

The portfolio-level Resources app focuses on portfolio resource planning. Resource constraints such as time, cost, and availability can prevent all of the projects in your portfolio from being executed. The objective of portfolio resource planning is to select the right combination of projects to execute that maximizes a portfolio's value while still meeting the resource constraints present in an organization or department.

In Primavera Cloud, enter labor demands on workspace-level roles assigned to the projects within a portfolio. At the portfolio level, review the labor demands and develop different role allocation scenarios, choosing the scenario that maximizes the portfolio's value without overallocating the roles in the selected projects.

To create the best possible scenario, you can manually allocate labor units to roles, modify role allocation dates, analyze labor costs, and include or exclude projects from the plan. You can also use the Optimization tool to automatically select projects according to input constraints. Create as many scenarios as necessary to determine the best mix of projects for a resource plan.

When multiple scenarios have been created, you can compare the financial data and other key performance indicators across the projects in the scenarios you created. This process enables you to develop the most realistic scenarios for approval and execution.

Scenarios that are ready for execution can be sent through workflows for reviews, proposals, and approvals. You can designate different groups of users to each workflow role. At the end of the process, a single scenario will be approved and ready for use.

After it is approved, the scenario serves as a guide for a resource planner to commit units to the selected projects in accordance with the plan. Portfolio resource planning can only be done on projects in the portfolio. If a portfolio includes another portfolio, that portfolio and its projects are not available on the Resource Planning page.

Before you can begin resource planning, you must first create and assign workspace-level roles to the projects in your portfolio. These roles will be used to create high-level demand requirements.

To build a resource plan:

  1. Add a Resource Planning Scenario
  2. Configure the Resource Planning Page
  3. Select projects for inclusion in the plan:
  4. Compare your scenarios by reviewing allocation and other role-related data.
  5. Send one or more scenarios through the resource plan approval process.
