Be default, characteristics are a combination of InvocableMap.StreamingAggregator.PARALLEL and InvocableMap.StreamingAggregator.RETAINS_ENTRIES, which is sub-optimal and should be overridden by the aggregator implementation if the aggregator does not need to retain entries (which is often the case).
