Defining the Timescale

Use this task to define the timescale line or lines that appear at the top and bottom of the layout. Activities that fall within the time range defined for the timescale are those that are included in the layout.

Before you begin this task, open the Layout Options page as described in one of the following tasks:

It is from the context of those tasks that you click the Timescale tab to define the timescale.

When you finish the following task, resume at the step in the applicable previous task where you left off.

To define the Timescale for the layout:

  1. On the Timescale tab of the Layout Options page, in the General section of the Primary sub-tab:
    1. In the Start list, select a start date. If you select custom date, then enter a date in the date field or select a date from the list. Use the Start spinner to define the left limit less or more than the Start Date. This is only applicable if you don't select Custom Date. In the Start Interval list, select a time unit for the start spinner value.
    2. In the Finish list, select a finish date. If you select custom date, then enter a date in the date field or select a date from the list. Use the Finish spinner to define the left limit less or more than the Finish Date. This is only applicable if you don't select Custom Date. In the Finish Interval list, select a time unit for the finish spinner value.

Note: Extending the Start date by several days earlier and the Finish date by several days later ensures that all labels and relationship lines at the timescale boundaries will display properly. Labels, connector blocks, and relationships lines at the timescale boundaries may cause additional pages to print. You can also use rolling dates to avoid printing errors.

  2. In the Styling section:
    1. In the Font Family list, select a font if you want to customize the text associated with the timescale lines.
    2. In the Font Style list, select a font style if you want to customize the text associated with the timescale lines.
    3. In the Size list, select a size if you want to customize the font size of text associated with the timescale lines.
    4. In the Color list, select a color if you want to customize the text color of the timescales.
    5. In the Background Color list, select a color if you want to customize the background color of the timescales.
  3. In the Background section:
    1. For each row number proceed as follows:
      • Select to show the line on top or bottom. Bottom is only available for TSLD.
      • In the associated Type list, select a date type.
      • In the associated Date Interval list, select a time interval.
      • In the associated Shift Calendar list, select a shift calendar, if you selected Shift as the date interval.
    2. Proceed as follows if you want to show sight lines for each timescale line option you select:
      • Select Sight Lines.
      • In the Interval Frequency list, enter or select the number that determines the frequency of the sight line that relates directly to the Date Interval selected.
      • Select a thickness, color, style, and start, end, and cap style associated with the sight line.
  4. Click Add Timescale Icon to add a Zoom Area tab.
  5. On the Zoom area tab:
    1. Select Show timescale area if you want to display a zoomed timescale area. This option is selected by default.
    2. In the Zoom Percentage field, define how much you want to zoom.

      Notes:

      • You can create as many zoom areas as needed. Click the Delete Zoom Area to delete a zoom area.
      • You can magnify or shrink the custom area when the zoom percentage is less than 100%. For example, if one row is displayed, and the Primary Timescale is set to Week and the Zoom Area is set to Day Name, set the Zoom Percentage to 700% to make one day equal the same width as one week.
