Console Announcements

This topic describes the announcements that Oracle Cloud Infrastructure displays in the Console. Console announcements communicate timely, important information about service status. You can view a list of ongoing and past announcements. If you want to receive announcements through email or another delivery mechanism, you can manage tenancy administrator email preferences or configure announcement subscriptions.

Note

  • If you use Oracle Platform Cloud Services or Oracle Cloud Applications and you have announcements about those service entitlements, the Console displays a banner with a link that you can use to access those announcements. For more information about these announcements, including how to set notification preferences, see Monitoring Notifications.
Tip

Watch a video introduction to the service.

Types of Announcements

Announcements belong to different categories. An announcement's prefix helps you understand, at a glance, the type and relative severity of the information and whether there's anything you can or must do. Announcement types currently include the following, in order of most important to least:

  • Required action. You must take specific action within your environment.
  • Emergency change. There is a time period during which an unplanned, but urgent, change associated with your environment will take place.
  • Emergency maintenance extended. The emergency maintenance period has been extended beyond what was previously communicated.
  • Emergency maintenance rescheduled. The emergency maintenance period has been postponed to a later time or date.
  • Recommended action. You have specific action to take within your environment, but the action is not required.
  • Planned change. There is a time period during which a planned change associated with your environment will take place.
  • Planned change extended. The scheduled change period has extended beyond what was previously communicated.
  • Planned change rescheduled. The planned change to your environment has been postponed to a later time or date.
  • Production event. An impactful change to your environment either recently occurred or is actively occurring.
  • Scheduled maintenance. There is a time period during which planned maintenance activities will be performed on your environment. Maintenance activities can include restarting services or other similarly impactful actions.
  • Emergency maintenance completed. Emergency maintenance affecting your environment has been completed and regular operations have resumed.
  • Planned change completed. The planned change to your environment has been completed and regular operations have resumed.
  • Information. There is information that you might find useful, but is not urgent and does not require action on your part.

For announcements that require action and affect Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Compute instances, you will get 14 days of advance notice. If you need to delay the actions described in the announcement, contact support to request one of the alternate dates listed in the announcement. For some announcements, you can reschedule for a date up to 2 weeks later. Critical vulnerabilities might not be eligible for delay.

Required IAM Policy

Each service in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure integrates with IAM for authentication and authorization, for all interfaces (the Console, SDK or CLI, and REST API).

To use Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, you must be granted security access in a policy  by an administrator. This access is required whether you're using the Console or the REST API with an SDK, CLI, or other tool. If you get a message that you don’t have permission or are unauthorized, verify with your administrator what type of access you have and which compartment  to work in.

Depending on whether you have access, you might not see any announcements. With access to announcements, you can either see only the summary version of any given announcement or you can also view announcement details.

For administrators: for typical policies that give users access to announcements, see Restrict user access to view only summary announcements, Let users view details of announcements, and Let admins manage announcement subscriptions. For more information, see Details for the Announcements Service.

If you're new to policies, see Getting Started with Policies and Common Policies.

Email Delivery

As part of your service agreement, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure also contacts the tenancy administrator with service status announcements through email. These emails help alert you to upcoming changes that impact the tenancy, such as those involving data centers or instances you use, or about required action on your part. Whenever possible, we try to provide advance notice of impactful events.

Note

You should prepare to receive announcements from a different email address for each region. If you previously configured mailbox rules for receiving email announcements, update them so you don't miss emails from the new senders. An example sender email address is noreply@mail.announcements.us-ashburn-1.oci.oraclecloud.com. For a list of region identifiers, see About Regions and Availability Domains.

By default, Oracle sends service status announcements to the default tenancy administrator email address on record. If you want to change the default tenancy administrator email address on record, contact Oracle Support. For more information, see Contacting Support.

If you want announcements sent through other delivery mechanisms or to multiple recipients, you can create an announcement subscription. For more information, see Subscribing to Announcements.

Lastly, although you can receive announcements through email, because of its inherently unreliable nature as a communication mechanism, we strongly recommend that you prioritize the information available in the Console or through the API and CLI instead.

To manage email preferences for announcements
  1. Click the Announcements icon (Announcements menu icon), and then click Subscriptions.
  2. Click Manage administrator email preferences.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • If you want Oracle to send email announcements, click Opt in to receive email announcements. By default, Oracle emails only announcements that impact tenancy resources and about outages. If you prefer to receive all announcements, including informational announcements that require no action or that more generally address customers, also click Send email for all announcements, including informational announcements specific to this tenancy.
    • If you want Oracle to withhold email copies of announcements, click Opt out to stop receiving all email announcements. You must also select the check box to acknowledge that you understand opting out can result in important missed email that could impact the tenancy.
  4. When you are finished, click Save changes.

Viewing Announcements

This section describes how to view announcements. The Announcements icon displays a green dot if you have any unread announcements.

To dismiss a banner announcement

On rare occasions, the Console might display an announcements as a banner that spans the width of the top of your browser window. As long as the announcement remains in effect and you have the access to view announcements, the banner announcement displays each time you sign in to the Console until you mark it as read.

  • To close a banner announcement until the next time you sign in to the Console, click the X at the far right edge of the banner. If you want to stop seeing an announcement as a banner altogether, you must mark it as read. For more information, see To mark an announcement as read.

Subscribing to Announcements

This section describes how to create announcement subscriptions.

To receive only announcements that you consider relevant, create an announcement subscription. Announcement subscriptions let you configure filters that define the criteria you want announcements to meet before they are sent to subscribers. Creating an announcement subscription includes defining an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Notifications topic to which you want to publish these filtered announcements. The announcements then arrive to you and other recipients, as appropriate, at the delivery endpoints configured in the Notifications topic.

Note

Subscribers should prepare to receive announcements from a different email address for each region. An example sender email address is noreply@notification.us-ashburn-1.oci.oraclecloud.com. For a list of region identifiers, see About Regions and Availability Domains.

Using the Command Line Interface (CLI)

For information about using the CLI, see Command Line Interface (CLI). For a complete list of flags and options available for CLI commands, see the Command Line Reference.

Some of the following commands require complex input. For example, creating a filter group requires you to provide filters in JSON format. You can see the expected format of the input by opening a command prompt and running the command with the --generate-full-command-json-input option. For example, to generate the JSON for creating a filter group, run the following command:

oci announce announcement-subscription create-filter-group --generate-full-command-json-input

In the output, the following shows how to input the filters in the new filter group:

{
  "announcementSubscriptionId": "string",
  "filters": [
    {
      "type": "string",
      "value": "string"
    },
    {
      "type": "string",
      "value": "string"
    }
  ],
  "ifMatch": "string",
  "name": "string"
}
To view the details of an announcement
Open a command prompt and run oci announce announcements get to view detailed information about an announcement:
oci announce announcements get --announcement-id <announcement_OCID>
For example:

oci announce announcements get --announcement-id ocid1.announcement.region1..<unique_ID>

Viewing the details of an announcement provides you with the following information:

  • Summary. A summary of the issue or event that serves as the announcement title.
  • Lifecycle State. The current lifecycle state of the announcement resource itself.
  • Description. A description of the issue or event that provides more detail than the summary text of the announcement.
  • OCID. The announcement's unique, Oracle-assigned identifier.
  • Reference Ticket Number. The number to use to refer to the issue when talking to Support.

To create an announcement subscription

To receive only announcements that you consider relevant, create an announcement subscription. Announcement subscriptions let you configure filters that define the criteria you want announcements to meet before they are sent to subscribers. Creating an announcement subscription includes defining an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Notifications topic to which you want to publish these filtered announcements. The announcements then arrive to you and other recipients, as appropriate, at the delivery endpoints configured in the Notifications topic.

Open a command prompt and run oci announce announcement-subscription create to create an announcement subscription:
oci announce announcement-subscription create --compartment-id <compartment_OCID> --display-name <announcement_subscription_name> --ons-topic-id <Notifications_topic_OCID>
For example:
oci announce announcement-subscription create --compartment-id ocid1.compartment.<realm>..<unique_ID> --display-name newannouncementsubscription --ons-topic-id ocid1.onstopic.<realm>.<region>.<unique_ID>

For more information about filter group options, see FilterGroupDetails. For more information about Notifications topic options, see CreateSubscriptionDetails.
