About User Variables

User variables are selectable members on the row, column, or POV.

Cloud data source types: Enterprise Profitability and Cost Management, Financial Consolidation and Close, FreeForm, Planning, Planning Modules, Tax Reporting

On-premises data source types: Oracle Hyperion Financial Management, Oracle Hyperion Planning

When a Cloud EPM or Oracle Hyperion Planning form contains user variables, or when a Financial Management data form has selectable dimensions, rows, or columns, you can modify them in Oracle Smart View for Office.

There are three types of user variables in forms:

  • Standard
  • Dynamic
  • Context-sensitive

User variables are set in the Preferences dialog in the web or in Smart View.

See the following sections for guidelines on working with standard, and dynamic and context-sensitive user variables.

Standard User Variables

If user variables have not been previously set in user preferences in the web business process or in Smart View:

  • Cloud EPM Forms 2.0: Starting in Smart View 25.200 and Cloud EPM 25.09, when opening a Forms 2.0 form, a message is displayed which provides a link to the Preferences dialog, User Variables tab, where you can set the missing user variables.

  • Cloud EPM Forms 1.0, Oracle Hyperion Planning and Financial Management: When opening a form, a message is displayed instructing you to set the missing user variables. The message also contains a link to open the Preferences dialog, User Variables tab, where you can set the user variables. To access the User Preferences dialog, from the tree list in the Smart View Panel, right-click the application name, then select User Preferences. In the Preferences dialog, select the User Variables tab, and then set the missing user variables.

Dynamic and Context-Sensitive User Variables

Consider the following when working with dynamic and context-sensitive user variables:

  • Starting in 25.08, for Forms 2.0 and dashboards, Cloud EPM automatically sets default values for dynamic and context-sensitive user variables based on the highest level of the user's access the first time the form is opened.

Users won't need to select values for dynamic and context-sensitive user variables before working in a form. Users can then change the values, if needed, after opening the form using the procedure in this topic.

Specifically, for missing dynamic user variables or context-sensitive user variables on a given form, Cloud EPM checks if the variable has any limit defined:

    • If a limit is defined, then the limit is evaluated, and the first accessible member is chosen as the default value for the user variable.

    • If a limit is not defined, then weSmart View retrieves the level 0 members for the dimension associated with the user variable and fills in the first accessible member.

In cases where Cloud EPM is not able to pick a default value because of security reasons (for example, no access or no any allowable members), then the form is not loaded and a message informs users that the variables must be set in User Preferences.

  • Standard user variables, if undefined, will still need user intervention to define missing values in preferences, described in Setting User Preferences.
