Simplified Upgrade

Beginning with Applications Release 9.2, a Simplified Upgrade is available. Whereas a Traditional Upgrade replaces all JD Edwards EnterpriseOne objects, the Simplified Upgrade process identifies and replaces only specific standard JD Edwards EnterpriseOne objects that have changed between from Applications Release 9.0 Update 2 or Release 9.1 to Applications Release 9.2. The Simplified Upgrade does not support upgrades from releases prior to 9.0 Update 2.

The concept is to simplify the upgrade in terms of lessening the requirement to retrofit custom changes. The Simplified Upgrade process applies code and objects in a net-change format that preservers unaffected modified objects. This is accomplished using a manifest that identifies the objects that were changed by JD Edwards software development in the from release and the to release.

Tip: This toolset is also provided in Tools Releases prior to Tools Release 9.2. Therefore you can run the Impact Analyzer from Releases 9.0 and 9.1 before you install Release 9.2. The enhanced Impact Analyzer is delivered with the Planner Upgrade for Releases 9.0 and 9.1. You can download the manifest from the Update Center.

You can run the Impact Analysis Report (R96711) to determine the impact on all objects in your environment. You should run this report against the release to be upgraded (that is, either environments for Applications Release 9.0.2 or 9.1).

This report:

  • Identifies new objects to be loaded into system

  • Identifies existing objects that will be replaced

  • Identifies obsoleted objects that will be deleted.

  • Allows objects to be filtered by system code

  • Analyzes overall impact and advises the most efficient upgrade type (Traditional or Simplified).

The Impact Analysis Report is described in the chapter of this guide entitled: Before You Begin the Installation or Upgrade.

Following is a summary of the toolset enhancements that support the Simplified Upgrade type:

  • Platform Pack updated to support an option for Simplified Upgrade

Using the Simplified Upgrade option, the Platform Pack does not install Central Objects for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and the data source definition is updated accordingly. The Platform Pack process also changes the release level identifiers and the table and index generation definitions for Central Objects tables.

  • Planner updated to support a plan type for Simplified Upgrade

  • Environment Workbench additionally runs an Object Librarian copy and a pathcode copy to support the Simplified Upgrade process.

  • Spec Merge is modified to merge designated manifest pristine objects to the existing target pathcode.

  • Spec Merge adds a summary report that outlines objects to be replaced and which of those objects have been modified and will therefore require modifications to be retrofitted.

Caution: Best Practice. Because the Spec Merge function of the Simplified Upgrade replaces objects that have been changed for 9.2 by JD Edwards in the previous Central Objects in the pathcode to be upgraded, before you upgrade an environment you should make sure you have a copy of the modified object, which could be in another Central Objects, or saved in OMW. In this manner you can overlay your customized object in Central Objects without having to retrofit the modifications.
  • The Planner validates existing translations are kept intact and updates their definitions accordingly.

Note: The language pack still needs to be run to fully implement languages.
  • The Summary Report at the end of the Workbench, which is similar to the ESU summary report, is modified as follows:

    1. Lists objects that have been replaced or merged with customer modifications.

    2. Lists objects that have been added.

    3. Lists objects that have been deleted.

    4. Lists objects that have been replaced.

    5. Instructs users that it is recommended that they run the Custom Object Analysis (COA) tool to compare their upgraded environment against the previously saved application environment in order to outline spec differences.

Regarding logic, when the Simplified Upgrade option is chosen the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Platform Pack Installer does not deliver Central Objects. The existing Central Objects are preserved and the data sources are configured to point to those path codes, which can be either from JD Edwards Release 9.0 Update 2 or 9.1.

Regarding the database, for a Simplified Upgrade the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Platform Pack Installer performs the same as a Traditional Upgrade in terms of delivering the entire database for the for Pristine environment. However, unlike the Traditional Upgrade, the Simplified Upgrade does not deliver Central Objects for other environments.

The following diagram illustrates the process flow for the Simplified Upgrade where the items highlighted in red indicate specific areas of changed relative to the Traditional Upgrade.
