Add a Language Narrative Visualization

The language narrative visualization provides insights into your company's data. These insights can be in the form of breakdown or trend.

About the Language Narrative Visualization

The language narrative visualization creates natural language descriptions of the attributes and measures in your dataset.

The language narrative visualization generates descriptions based on the type of visualization. When you select the language narrative visualization, it selects up to two dimensions and attributes each to use for the description. You can also choose to select the data elements for your language narrative visualization. The following combinations of data elements are supported:

  • One measure, one or two time dimensions
  • One dimension, one measure, one time dimension
  • One or two dimensions, one or two measures

If the total number of data elements used for the language narrative visualization exceeds 10,000, only the first 10,000 data elements are used when generating the description.

You can modify the level of detail of your language narrative. Choosing a lower number for level of detail provides less detail and is helpful if you want the description to only broadly address the observable data. Choosing a higher number provides more detail can give a more granular description of the data. See Change Level of Detail for Language Narrative Visualization.

You can change the tone of the language narrative from the default, factual, to business or casual. See Change Tone for Language Narrative Visualization.

Business and casual tones are available if you have enabled generative AI for the language narrative visualization feature. If you do not have generative AI enabled for this visualization, only the factual tone is available. See Configure Generative AI Services.

Limitations

Language narrative visualizations have the following limitations:

  • The text in the visualization can be displayed in English or French. Other languages aren't supported. Oracle Analytics Cloud maps French locales (fr and fr-CA) to the French language, and maps all other locales to English.
  • Presentation mode and embedding items such as dashboards aren't supported.
  • Data brushing functionality isn't applicable to this visualization type.
  • Data actions aren't applicable to this visualization type.

Create a Language Narrative Visualization

Use a language narrative visualization to describe the measures and attributes in a visualization.

If you haven't already created a workbook, you need to create one. See Begin to Build a Workbook.
  1. On the Home page, hover over a workbook, click Actions, then select Open.
  2. Click the Visualize pane and double-click Language Narrative.
  3. Click the Data pane and drag data elements to the canvas.

Change Level of Detail for Language Narrative Visualization

You can use a sliding scale to determine how granular the detail is in your language narrative visualization.

The highest number in the level of detail property provides the most description information about the visualization. The lower number provides a minimum amount of information. Don't use the numbers; these values can change.

  1. On the Home page, hover over the workbook containing your Langauge Narrative visualization, click Actions, then select Open.
  2. Click Edit to open the workbook in author mode.
  3. Select the language narrative visualization you want to change tone for.
  4. In the Properties tab, click the Level of Detail option and use the slider to select a new level of detail.
  5. Click Save.
