Looker

Before You Begin

Introduction

This document describes how to configure Oracle Identity Cloud Service to provide Single Sign-On (SSO) for Looker using SAML.

About Looker

Looker is a web-based data discovery platform that uses business intelligence to make data accessible to organizations and data analysts.

After integrating Looker with Oracle Identity Cloud Service:

  • Users can access Looker using their Oracle Identity Cloud Service login credentials.
  • Users can start Looker using the Oracle Identity Cloud Service My Apps console.
  • Admins can assign and revoke user access to the Looker app using the Oracle Identity Cloud Service administration console.

What Do You Need?

  • An Oracle Identity Cloud Service account with authorization rights to manage apps and users (Identity Domain Administrator or Application Administrator).
  • A Looker account with authorization rights to configure federated authentication.

Prerequisite Step

A verified domain name is required before you can register and activate the Looker app. You obtain that domain name from Looker.

The Looker domain name appears in the Looker login URL: https://<Domain_Name>.looker.com/login that you received in an email from Looker.

Configuring the Looker App in Oracle Identity Cloud Service

Use this section to register and activate the Looker app, and then assign users to the app.

Registering and Activating the Looker App

  1. Access the Oracle Identity Cloud Service administration console, select Applications, and then click Add.

  2. Click App Catalog.

  3. Search for Looker, click Add, and then click Next.

  4. In the App Details section, enter your Looker Domain Name, and then click Next.

Note: This is the domain name value that you obtained by performing the steps in the "Prerequisite Step" section.

  5. Click Download Identity Provider Metadata. To learn about other methods you can use to access SAML metadata, see Access SAML Metadata.

Tip: Use this file later during the Looker configuration in the "Configuring SSO for Looker" section.

  6. Click Finish. Oracle Identity Cloud Service displays a confirmation message.

  7. Click Activate, and then click Activate Application. Oracle Identity Cloud Service displays a confirmation message.

Assigning Users to the Looker App

  1. On the Looker app page in Oracle Identity Cloud Service, select Users, and then click Assign. The Assign Users window appears.

  2. Select users that you want to assign to Looker, and then click OK. Oracle Identity Cloud Service displays a confirmation message stating that the Looker app is assigned to the users that you selected.

Configuring SSO for Looker

  1. Access Looker as an administrator using the URL: https://<Domain_Name>.looker.com/login. The Shared page appears.

  2. On the header menu, click Admin. The General Settings page appears.

  3. In the left navigation menu, locate the Authentication section, and then click SAML. The SAML Authentication page appears.

  4. On the SAML Authentication page, Click Enabled.

  5. Under the SAML Auth Settings section, locate the IdP Metadata(Optional) field, paste the contents of the Identity Provider Metadata that you downloaded earlier during Looker registration in the "Registering and Activating the Looker App" section, and then click Load.

Note: The values of IdP URL, IdP Issuer, and then IdP Certificate fields are obtained from the identity provider metadata automatically.

  6. Enter the Looker Entity ID in SP Entity / IdP Audience(Optional) field that is recommended by looker application.

  7. Locate the Role Settings section, select User from the Default New User Roles drop-down list.

  8. Under the Test User Authentication (values are not saved) section, click Test SAML Authentication to confirm the configuration between Oracle Identity Cloud Service and the Looker app. When you are redirected to the Oracle Identity Cloud Service login page, sign in using your administrator credentials. A success message is displayed to confirm that the connection is established.

  9. Under the Migration Options section, turn ON the Alternate Login for Specified Users option.

Note: If the Alternate Login for Specified Users option is not turned on, enabling SSO deactivates the ability to log on to Looker using the user name and password.

  10. Select Looker Email/Password from the Merge Users Using drop-down list to allows existing users to log in to Looker app using the Looker email and password after enabling SSO for Looker.

  11. Click Update Settings to save the configuration.

Note: Users who are assigned to the Looker app in Oracle Identity Cloud Service can access Looker, even if the user does not have a Looker account.

Verifying the Integration

Use this section to verify that SSO works when initiated from Oracle Identity Cloud Service (IdP Initiated SSO) and Looker (SP initiated SSO).

Verifying Identity Provider Initiated SSO from Oracle Identity Cloud Service

  1. Access the Oracle Identity Cloud Service My Profile console using the URL: https://<IDCS-Service-Instance>.identity.oraclecloud.com/ui/v1/myconsole.

  2. Log in using credentials for a user that is assigned to the Looker app. Oracle Identity Cloud Service displays a shortcut to Looker under My Apps.

  3. Click Looker. The Looker home page appears.

  4. In the upper-right corner of the header, click the user icon, and then confirm that the user that is logged in is the same for both Looker and Oracle Identity Cloud Service.

This confirms that SSO that is initiated from Oracle Identity Cloud Service works.

Verifying Service Provider Initiated SSO from Looker

  1. Access Looker using the URL: https://<Domain_Name>.looker.com/login, and click AUTHENTICATE. You are redirected to the Oracle Identity Cloud Service login page.

  2. Log in using credentials for a user that is assigned to the Looker app. The Looker home page appears.

  3. In the upper-right corner of the header, click the user icon, and then confirm that the user that is logged in is the same for both Looker and Oracle Identity Cloud Service.

This confirms that SSO that is initiated from Looker works.

Troubleshooting

Use this section to locate solutions to common integration issues.

Known Issues

Oracle Identity Cloud Service displays the message, "You are not authorized to access the app. Contact your system administrator."

Cause 1: The SAML 2.0 integration between the Oracle Identity Cloud Service Looker app and Looker is deactivated.

  • In the App Details section, click Activate, and then click Activate Application. Oracle Identity Cloud Service displays a confirmation message.

Cause 2: The administrator revokes access for the user at the same time that the user tries to access the Looker app using Oracle Identity Cloud Service.

Solution 2:

  • Access the Oracle Identity Cloud Service administration console, select Applications, and then select Looker.
  • In the App Details section, select Users, and then click Assign to re-assign the user.
