Updating Available Content in a Reference File

As the reference file author, you may want to update existing content in a reference file.

For example, you may need to refresh a profitability report table with new data. Any updates made in the reference file are automatically refreshed in the doclet that embeds the report content when the reference file is uploaded back to the doclet.

To update content in a reference file:

  1. Select and check out the doclet that contains the reference file you would like to modify.
  2. Click Inspect in the Narrative Reporting ribbon to open the Properties dialog box.
  3. In Properties , click the Embedded Content tab, Embedded Content tab, and then click the Available Sources link.
  4. Click Actions button which appears next to a reference file next to the reference file with the content you want to work with, and select Download.

    The file is downloaded by default to your Downloads folder.

    Alternatively, on the Available Sources tab, click on the file name link. This downloads the file to the Downloads folder and opens the file in Excel.

    You can close the Properties dialog in the doclet for now.

  5. If not already open, open the file in Excel, make the updates and changes you require, and then save the file.
    Note that after saving the file, you may click the Upload button in the Narrative Reporting ribbon. Once the file is uploaded, close Excel and then proceed to step 10.

    Alternatively, to upload files using the Properties dialog, proceed to the next step.

  6. Return to the report package doclet you opened in the first step and, in the Narrative Reporting ribbon, click Inspect.
  7. In the Properties dialog, Embedded Contents tab, select Available Files, then click Actions button which appears next to a reference file next to the reference file containing the content you just modified, and select Upload.
  8. In the Upload dialog box, click Choose File and navigate to the location of the modified Excel reference file and select it, then click Open.
  9. Click OK to close the Upload dialog, then close the Properties dialog. You may also close Excel.
  10. To refresh the embedded content from the recently uploaded reference file, in the Narrative Reporting ribbon, select Refresh, and then Refresh Embedded Content.
  11. Upload and check in the doclet.
